IMO participates in UN COP20

IMO’s Edmund Hughes and Astrid Dispert are in Lima, Peru, to highlight IMO-adopted measures on energy efficiency for international shipping at the UN Climate Change Conference COP20 (1-12 December). On Monday (1 December), IMO is participating in a joint International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)/IMO side event on “International aviation and maritime transport: Addressing emissions from international bunker fuels” and will present the Third IMO Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Study 2014, which provides emissions estimates for international shipping for the period 2007–2012 and projections to 2050. IMO will also provide a statement to the 41st session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 41) under Agenda item 10(d)”Emissions from fuel used for international aviation and maritime transport”. IMO new Infographic explains what Polar Code means for ship safety

Polar Code highlights the potential hazards of operating in polar regions The International Code for ships operating in Polar Water was adopted on November 2014 by the IMO MSC 94. The Polar Code highlights the potential hazards of operating in polar regions, including ice, remoteness and rapidly changing and severe weather conditions, and provides goals and functional requirements in relation to ship design, construction, equipment, operations, training, and search and rescue, relevant to ships operating in Arctic and Antarctic waters.IMO has created an Infographic to explain what the Polar Code means for ship safety highlighting the following key issues for the proper equipment, design & construction, operation & manning for ships operating in Polar Waters:EquipmentWindows on BridgeMeans to clear melted ice, freezing rain, snow, mist, spray and condensationLifeboatsAll lifeboats to be partially or totally enclosed typeCloting IAdequate thermal protection for all persons on boardCloting IIOn passenger ships, an immersion suit or a thermal protective aid for each person on boardIce RemovalSpecial equipment for ice removal: such as electrical and pneumatic devices, special tools such as axes or wooden clubsFire SafetyExtinguishing equipment able to operable in cold temperatures; protect from ice; suitable for persons wearing bulky and cumbersome cold weather gearDesign ...

Turkey and Morocco: ballast water twins

IMO’s Murat Korcak has taken part in a national twinning workshop on ballast water management between Turkey and Morocco in Casablanca, Morocco (26-27 November) organized by the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) in close cooperation with the GEF-UNDP-IMO Global Ballast Water Management Programme (GloBallast) and funded through the IMO Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme. The workshop is the first example of the twinning concept under the GloBallast project, in which a Lead Partnering Country, experienced in the development of national BWM assessments and strategy, assists a country from the region to establish a national task force for the management of ballast water and explains the benefits and importance of adopting a national strategy for a smooth implementation of the Ballast Water Management Convention. Shipping industry is not ‘Cash Cow’, says ICS

The global shipping industry, which transports around 90% of world trade, only produced about 2.2% of the world's total Green House Gas emissions during 2012 compared to 2.8% in 2007. Shipping's total emissions have reduced by more than 10% during the same period. In advance of the United Nations Climate Conference in Lima (1-12 December), the global trade association for ship operators - the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) - says that the industry is on track to reduce its emissions by more than 20% by 2020 (compared to 2005) with further reductions going forward. This and other information about the impressive progress which the shipping industry is making to reduce its CO2 emissions is set out in a special brochure prepared for the UNFCCC Climate Change Conference (COP 20). This can be found on the global trade association's website. The shipping industry is the only industrial sector which is already covered by a binding global agreement to reduce its CO2 emissions, through technical and operational measures agreed - with full industry support - by its global regulator, the London-based International Maritime Organization (IMO). ICS explains that the IMO is now developing additional measures to reduce CO2 emissions from shipping ...
