Safe and Sustainable Shipping in a Changing Arctic Environment

   The World Ocean Council (WOC) is a Supporting Partner of the “ShipArc 2015” conference (Malmö, Sweden, 25-27 August 2015). ShipArc 2015 is organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the World Maritime University (WMU) and the Arctic Council‘s working group on Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment (PAME). Koji Sekimizu, IMO Secretary-General, will open the conference. ShipArc 2015 will bring together regulatory, governance, industry, indigenous, civil society, academic, and research participants around the theme of “Safe and Sustainable Shipping in a Changing Arctic Environment”. WOC has been invited to organize two industry panels to address: “Industry Developments, Opportunities and Challenges” and “Sustainable Arctic Business Development”. Representatives from shipping, oil and gas, fishing, mining, tourism, submarine cable, aquaculture or other sectors interested in participating on these panels are encouraged to contact the WOC by 7 July. Maritime and migration heads pledge action on unsafe mixed migration by sea

Address the crisis arising from the increase in unsafe migration The heads of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on Monday (29 June) reaffirmed their commitment to urgently address the humanitarian crisis arising from the dramatic increase in unsafe mixed migration across the oceans and seas in recent times.IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu and IOM Director-General William L. Swing met at IMO Headquarters in London and observed a minute's silence in honour of the thousands of migrants who have lost their lives on perilous journeys. They reiterated their concern about the loss of life, injury, trauma and serious human rights' violations affecting migrants, asylum-seekers and refugees travelling by sea.In a joint statement on enhanced cooperation and collaboration between the two Organizations, Mr. Sekimizu and Mr. Swing recognized the need for concerted global action to address this major challenge to the international community.They pledged to work together on a number of specific actions, including the establishment of an inter-agency platform for information sharing on unsafe mixed migration by sea and the dissemination of information material on the dangers of such migration, in collaboration with other interested agencies.They agreed to facilitate discussions to find solutions to unsafe ...

Celebrate Day of the Seafarer

IMO has launched a new campaign to celebrate the unsung heroes of shipping across the globe. This year's theme, A Career At Sea, aims to help address the predicted shortage of seafarers in the future by promoting and highlighting the positive benefits of choosing a career at sea.In particular, the campaign focuses on encouraging young people to consider seafaring and other maritime professions when making choices concerning their careers or their further education.The campaign shows that seafaring is a viable, attractive and exciting career option. Supporting the protection of South East Asian seas

  A project to identify potential sea areas in South East Asia which could be put forward for designation as Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas (PSSAs) is gaining traction with the holding of a second regional meeting in Hanoi, Viet Nam (24-25 June).  A PSSA can gain extra protection through the adoption of associated protective measures, such as ship routeing systems. IMO’s Ed Kleverlaan is facilitating the meeting, which is being held under the auspices of a co-operation agreement between IMO and the Norwegian Development Cooperation Agency, NORAD. The meeting is being attended by around 20 participants from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Viet Nam. IMO Regulatory update provided to emissions summit

IMO’s Edmund Hughes has presented an update of international regulatory developments for prevention of air pollution and the energy efficiency of ships to the 11th Integer Emissions Summit (16-18 June) in Brussels, Belgium.  The presentation to the marine vessels stream focused on providing information on the outcome of the recent IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee session (MEPC 68), including the decision to initiate the fuel oil availability review. Other issues highlighted were fuel oil quality, amendments to the NOx Technical Code 2008, the approval of a definition for Black Carbon, and the recent adoption of the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code) by the IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC). An overview of the findings of the Third IMO GHG Study 2014 and the current state of negotiations for a new climate change agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was also provided.
