IBIA issued a statement regarding the continuous pressure that is growing on the IMO, to deliver specific commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with proposals set by the ICS and other shipping organisations.

INTERCARGO says there are significant problems with the implementation of the Ballast Water Management regulation that need to be resolved immediately, considering that the Convention will be effective in less than five months.

BIMCO, IPTA and World Shipping Council (WSC) have jointly submitted a proposal to IMO suggesting issues for consideration at the forthcoming MEPC in developing the greenhouse gas strategy. Environmentalists are calling on IMO to investigate the use of tin in silicone-based foul release systems and other ships hull coatings, due to the increased concern for the re-emergence of organotin in marine hull coatings. While use of the organotin tributyltin was outlawed as an active biocide almost ten years ago, IMO is claimed to “have left the door open” for tin as a catalyst.

On March 16th, the lead advisor to the Clean Arctic Alliance, made a call on the Commission and the Member States to actively facilitate the ban on the use of heavy fuel oil and carriage as ship fuel, in vessels navigating the Arctic seas, through MARPOL of IMO.
