IMO Assembly adopts wide range of resolutions

Actions, Strategic plans, budget and resolutions adopted by the Assembly A wide range of resolutions, reflecting the broad canvas of the Organization's work, was adopted by the 27th Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), when it met in London at the Organization's Headquarters from 21 to 30 November 2011. They included a resolution urging Governments to continue their efforts to combat piracy and armed robbery against ships off the coast of Somalia and a resolution firmly establishing 25 June each year as the "Day of the Seafarer".The Assembly also adopted the high-level action and strategic plans for the Organization; the Organization's budget for 2012 to 2013; and several updated codes and guidance documents. Indonesia was reelected a Category C member of IMO Council Indonesia was reelected a Category C member of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s Council for the 2011-2013 period at the 27th IMO Assembly here on Saturday.At the 27th assembly led by Ambassador Eduardo Medina-Mora at the IMO Headquarters, Indonesia won 128 of the 155 valid votes, according to Ira Mamesah, second secretary of the Indonesian embassy here.The Indonesian delegation to the assembly was led by Transportation Minister E.E. Mangindaan accompanied by deputy chairmen Herry Sudradjat (interim charge d'affaires of the Indonesian embassy in London) and the communications inspector general of the ministry of transportation).The re-election of Indonesia as member of the IMO Council was an appreciation of the international community for the role of Indonesia which had actively provided positive contributions to IMO activities, particularly regarding security and safety of shipping and marine protection.Source: The Jakarta Post

Assembly, 27th session: 21-30 November 2011 The Assembly of the International Maritime Organization has elected the following States to be Members of its Council for the 2012-2013 biennium: Category (a)10 States with the largest interest in providing international shipping services:China, Greece, Italy, Japan, Norway, Panama, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, United Kingdom, United States. Category (b)10 States with the largest interest in international seaborne trade:Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden. Category (c)20 States not elected under (a) or (b) above, which have special interests in maritime transport or navigation and whose election to the Council will ensure the representation of all major geographic areas of the world:Australia, Bahamas, Belgium, Chile, Cyprus, Denmark, Egypt, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Liberia, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Morocco, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey. The Council is the executive organ of IMO and is responsible, under the Assembly, for supervising the work of the Organization. Between sessions of the Assembly, the Council performs all the functions of the Assembly, except that of making recommendations to Governments on maritime safety and pollution prevention.
