Although existing regulations –particularly MARPOL and the London Convention– explicitly prohibit the dumping of plastic at sea, these frameworks have their limitations, said IMarEST in a recent report on marine plastics. 

Emerging trends in maritime industry include not only a shift towards technology and innovation, but also a constant need to adapt to a number of key environmental issues that seem to redifine how shipping does business. In this regard, IMarEST published an informative infographic, summarizing the key environmental trends for shipping.

IMarEST, the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, launched a survey on scrubbers to acknowledge the existing problems and shortcomings of specific equipment types aiming to improve them. The survey aspires to acquire feedback from marine engineers as well as utilise the expertise within the Institute’s membership.

During the 'World Oceans Day', June 8, IMarEST announced the launch of IMarEST Women’s Network. The Network will be open to all members, both male and female; The inaugural meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 9 and participants are able to join either in person, or virtually. IMarEST by the launch of the Network boosts its idea of 'acting locally to succeed globally.'

Dr Bev Mackenzie, IMarEST Technical Director with inputs from IMarEST expert members issued a white paper, focusing on the importance of stakeholder management in creating societal value from coastal and ocean observations.

In April 2019 the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) in the UK launched a new research to understand the impact and threat to biosecurity from invasive species where the UK is witnessing a rise in the introduction of non-native species, with damaging effects from invasive species estimated to cost almost £1.8 billion a year.

IMarEST, in light of its partnership with the 'Navigating a Changing Climate (NaCC)' initiative, announced the launch of a survey aiming to explore the effects of the extreme weather events on seaports and inland ports. The survey aims to get a better insight into the consequences and the costs that arise after accidents from extreme weather.

In the week following, IMarEST announced that it will meet with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to issue papers for consideration by the Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) during its 74th session.

The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) collaborated with the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) to provide a wider industry perspective concerning the challenges,management practices and attitudes regarding marine plastics in the shipping industry.

IMO has developed a new set of toolkits to assess and address emissions from ships and ports. The Ship Emissions Toolkit and Port Emissions Toolkit have been developed under the GEF-UNDP-IMO GloMEEP Project, in collaboration with its strategic partners, IMarEST and IAPH.
