New Initiative to Improve the Fitness of Seafarers

Held at the International Labour Labour Organisation in Geneva The winners of the 201 International Seafarers' Welfare Awards were announced last night during a high profile ceremony at the International Labour Labour Organisation in Geneva.The ceremoney, which took place on the opening night ofthe Maritime Labour Convention tripartite meeting, was hosted by Mr Michael Grey, ex Editor of Lloyds List and attended by a number of key players in the industry including Mr Arthur Bowring, Managing Director of the Hong Kong Ship Owners Association and Mr David Cockroft, General Secretary of the International Transport Workers Federation.The winners are :Port of the Year : The Port of Antwerp, BelgiumSeafarers Centre of the Year : Duckdalben International Seamen's Club, HamburgShipping Company of the Year : Wilhelmsen Ship Management, Norway & MalaysiaWelfare Personality of the Year : Reverend Peter Ellis of Hong Kong & Mrs Paddy Percival of Durban, South AfricaJudge's Special Prize for Outstanding Services to Seafarers Welfare : Dr Suresh Idnani, IndiaSource: ICSW

Wilhelmsen Ship Management has been named Shipping Company of the Year InterManager Member company Wilhelmsen Ship Management has been named Shipping Company of the Year in the ICSW International Seafarers' Welfare Awards.Tushar Mohile, Head of Marine Personnel for Norwegian-based Wilhelmsen Ship Management received the award from InterManager Secretary General Kuba Szymanski at a ceremony in Geneva on December 12th, the opening night of the International Labour Organisation's Maritime Labour Convention tripartite meeting.Mr Mohile said: "We in Wilhemsen Ship Management accept the ICSW Seafarers Welfare Award with pride and humility, and on behalf of our more than 9,700 seafarers who represent us on more than 400 vessels. For us the award is an acknowledgement of our work with governance, training and processes towards our seafaring community. The report was commissioned by ICSW "It is clear that WiFi internet access is the sort of thing that would represent a quantum leap in the quality of a seafarer's life."The quote is from a comment piece in the prestigious Lloyds List on Tuesday 26 July in response to the launch of a new report from the ICSW. The report, Seafarer's Access to WiFi & WiMax in ports, is available for download from here .The report was commissioned by ICSW in order to learn more about how port-wide WiFi and WiMAX are helping seafarers to maintain closer contact with home, which is one of the top welfare concerns of seafarers.The research found that the majority of ports do not have portwide Wifi or WiMax. Many of those that do often restrict access to seafarers on cost and security grounds .However, there are some exceptional models of success, including the Port of Antwerp, the Port of Singapore and the Port of Kandla. The ICSW will use the findings of this research to encourage improvements in the sharing of knowledge and experiences between ports.
