A new freshwater charge that was applied this month in order to help the Panama Canal address climate change, will eventually cost the shipping industry up to $370 million a year. This fact marks another hit for the industry, after the coronavirus blow.

As the Panama Canal announced the implementation of a "Freshwater Charge" for ships transmitting the canal from February 15, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) alerted that this move will increase costs to ships by up to 15%.

The shipping industry is willing to support Nigerian Navy efforts and work with all parties, in order to end the escalation of piracy that acts as an endemic blight to free trade, was the key message of ICS Chairman Esben Poulsson while speaking after the ICS Board meeting in London this week. 

The Coronavirus outbreak has set the shipping industry into a frenzy, with major shipping stakeholders issuing guidance and recommendations, ports halting operations until further notice and a feeling of uncertainty on how this emergency will be dealt with.

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) recently issued its recommendations in order to limit coronavirus's spread. Specifically, its guidance follows with the World Health Organisation's (WHO) advice, saying that if the recommended measures are taken, there should be no ‘unnecessary restrictions of international traffic’.

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) published a report providing guidelines to the shipping industry of how to tackle age discrimination onboard, highlighting that in many jurisdictions age discrimination is unlawful and can create problems.

Recently, shipping stakeholders submitted a paper to the IMO proposing the addition of a new output under the work program on Fair treatment of seafarers detained on suspicion of committing maritime crimes. The paper highlights that in some cases the master and the crew may not be aware of their vessel being involved in smuggling activities

IMO 2020 an important moment for the global shipping industry, although it is possible there may be teething problems when IMO 2020 first comes into effect, said Guy Platten, Secretary General of the ICS, sharing a key message to the industry on the eve of the implementation of the IMO sulphur cap. 

Shipowner associations representing the global maritime transport industry submitted a proposal to the IMO to form the world’s first collaborative shipping R&D programme for pushing work of CO2 emissions reduction from international shipping.

In fact, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA), as well as the Spanish Shipowners’ Association (ANAVE) organized an event dedicated to the decarbonization of shipping, during COP 25, the UN Climate Change Conference, in Madrid.
