ZIM is another company to be joining TradeLens, a platform that was launched last year, as a joint venture between Maersk and IBM. Israeli carrier ZIM has signed up to participate in TradeLens, a blockchain-enabled documentation system designed to smooth bureaucracy between carriers, freight forwarders, customs officials and port authorities.

Israeli-based blockchain start-up 'LogChain' completed its first full cycle of an international blockchain-backed maritime shipment. The shipment consists of beverages from Belgium to Israel and was completed with the use of end-to-end digitized LogChain platform which handled all features of the supply chain, including electronic bill of lading and Letter of Credit.

David Jacoby, senior security researcher at Kaspersky, reported that data hacking is a major threat and this applies at both an individual and societal level. In light of cyber attacks, some companies have taken novel steps to try to thwart credential stuffing attacks against their users by obtaining the breached data themselves and cross referencing it against their own database.

Pacific International Lines (PIL) has used an electronic Bill of Lading (e-BL) built on the IBM Blockchain Platform in a successful real-time pilot tracking shipment of mandarin oranges from China for the Lunar New Year celebrations. With the use of the e-BL, the trial has experienced a decrease in the administrative process of transferring the title deed from five to seven days to just one second.

Port of Rotterdam Authority launched an Internet of Things (IoT) platform. It's the first application for hydro/meteo that has been put into operation. The system uses an extensive network of sensors to provide accurate and up-to-date water (hydro) and weather (meteo) data particularly for the planning and management of shipping. The port aims to make its operations safer and more efficient. 

On January 19, a product tanker was attacked while in Abidjan Anchorage, Ivory Coast. The armed robbery that took place, resulted to the robbers escaping the vessel with stolen ship's stores. According to IBM between the Ivory Coast and the Democratic Republic of Congo the robbery incidents more than doubled in 2018.

The Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras will cooperate with IBM on Tradelens, the digital platform based on blockchain that IBM and Maersk have developed. By the end of 2018, over 100 organizations and 20 port operators have joined Tradelens. The TradeLens project is a technological solution developed by IBM and Maersk that allows the blockchain to be applied to the global supply chain.

MineHub and IBM will collaborate to use blockchain technology in order to improve operational efficiencies, logistics and financing and reduce costs in the mineral concentrates supply chain. The first case will be established on the MineHub platform and will manage concentrate from Goldcorp's Penasquito Mine in Mexico during its path to market.

ExxonMobil signed an agreement with IBM to promote the potential use of quantum computing in developing next-generation energy and manufacturing technologies. The partnership was announced during the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
