The International Bunker Industry Association’s members (IBIA), along with the wider shipping industry, are actively pursuing operational energy efficiency improvements as part of goals consistent with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2023 Strategy on Reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions from Ships.

The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) and BIMCO have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on some of the monumental challenges and opportunities within the areas of bunker, marine energy and maritime sectors and help facilitate shipping’s decarbonisation efforts.

IBIA has made an assessment of the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) operational energy efficiency rating for ships, highlighting that ''initial findings indicate a clear problem for bunker vessels to comply with limited scope for enhancing the operational energy efficiency to achieve the required C rating''.  

IBIA focuses on changes in bunkering sales due to Red Sea attacks, the ability to quantify these changes, supply challenges, and future demand expectations.

As the new Executive Director of IBIA since September 2023, Alexander Prokopakis refers to key priorities on the agenda, highlighting that a multifaceted approach addressing technological, regulatory, and operational aspects as well as collaboration are vital for a more sustainable future. In this regard, IBIA will focus on improving transparency and member services.

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) have submitted a joint proposal to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for a Global GHG (greenhouse gas) Fuel Standard.
