Corvus Energy, Siemens AS and Fjord1 have announced the award of the contract for the Fannefjord LNG battery hybrid ferry. The refit Fannefjord will use a 1050V, 410kWh Energy Storage System (ESS) consisting of 63 Corvus Energy AT6500 advanced lithium polymer batteries. The ESS will be integrated with the existing Siemens drive systems and be powered by two LNG generators. The 123m Fannefjord, sister ship to the vessel Moldefjord, has a capacity of 390 passengers and 125 cars or 12 road trailers and 55 cars. Typically LNG-­‐ diesel-­‐electric ferries of this design, feature one diesel engine and two LNG-­‐fuelled main engines. The  U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) has announced a $450,000 grant to AEP Rivers Operations of St. Louis, Missouri, to modify the Motor Vessel (M/V)Christopher Parsonage, into a fuel-efficient hybrid vessel that conserves fuel and reduces harmful vessel emissions.  The modification will provide the180-ft tug boat, which operates along the lower Mississippi River, with a hybrid generator set attached to the main engine that will provide auxiliary power, which would normally be produced from the diesel generator.  MARAD will use the test results from this project to support further work related to vessel air emissions, energy conservation, and efficiency.  The study is expected to be completed by 2017. Seachange Group LLC (Seachange)  said in a newsletter that testing of its new Eco-Hybrid Fuel (EHF) is going well. SeaChange Group has developed Eco-Hybrid Fuel,  a patented glycerol-diesel emulsion technology to provide lower operational costs and improvements to emissions (SOx, NOx, PM), without requiring any engine modifications. EHF is composed of an emulsified blend of glycerol and diesel fuels. Glycerol as a fuel additive has benefits both economic and environmental. Currently, a pilot processor is under construction, which will provide sufficient quantities of fuel for testing in work vessels in 2014.  Sales to early adopters are planned for early 2015. Why glycerol? Cost: Glycerol is a by byproduct of biodiesel production.  As biodiesel production increases the supply of glycerol increases and therefore the cost of glycerol decreases. Composition:  Glycerol is an oxygen containing molecule.  Under proper combustion conditions, the addition of glycerol to a fuel reduces NOx, SOx, PM emissions. Lubricity:  Glycerol is a lubricant with high viscosity.  Both of these properties make it an ideal additive for use in diesel engines. Environmental Benefits:  Glycerol isolated from biodiesel production therefore has a low carbon footprint(same as biodiesel).  Glycerol is 100% renewable and likely to meet the U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS2) definition RIN D4 for green house gas emission reductions.  ...

LNG Hybrid Barge to arrive in Hamburg

Kongsberg Maritime will deliver Integrated Vessel Control Systems for two new Siem Offshore owned, Helix Energy Solutions Group, Inc. chartered Well Intervention Vessels (WIV) being built at German shipyard Flensburger-Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG). Both vessels are due for delivery in 2016, and will provide well-intervention services offshore Brazil for Petrobras, for an initial period of 4 years with options to extend. Based on the Salt 307WIV design, the new WIVs (FSG 765 and 766) will have a length of 158 metres, a beam of 31 metres and max. service speed of 17 knots. The vessels are compliant to MODU code and well-Intervention 2 notation, and will provide accommodation for 150 persons. Ocean Rig UDW has chosen Kongsberg Maritime to supply an extensive offshore and navigation simulator package for a brand new training centre. With a sophisticated integrated simulator suite, enabling specific operations and vessel team training, Ocean Rig's new facility, is shaping up to become one of the world's most advanced offshore training centres. Ocean Rig owns and operates two ultra-deepwater semisubmersible drilling rigs and nine ultra-deepwater drillships (including three newbuilds for delivery 2014-2016). All of these vessels operate with key technology from KONGSBERG, including Dynamic Positioning, Thruster Control, Integrated Control and Automation, Safety/Fire & Gas and Riser Management systems. Kongsberg Maritime Engineering (KME), the wholly owned Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) subsidiary of Kongsberg Maritime, will deliver an Integrated Control and Safety System for the new BW Offshore 'Catcher FPSO'. The contract follows BW Offshore's signing of a lease and operate contract with Premier Oil and its joint venture partners at the end of April 2014 for a FPSO to operate on the Catcher oil field in the UK North Sea. The field is owned by Premier Oil (50%, operator), Cairn Energy (30%) and MOL (20%). BW Offshore's scope includes the delivery of the FPSO, mooring system, installation and operation of the unit throughout the charter period. The FPSO will have a processing capacity of 60,000 bopd and a storage capacity of 650,000 bbl. BW Offshore will order a newbuild hull from Japan for the project, while integration work will be performed in Singapore. The FPSO shall be ready for production mid-2017. Hydroid, a subsidiary of Kongsberg Maritime and manufacturer of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), announces that it will sponsor the AUV Hydrographic Bootcamp, taking place August 3 - 8, 2014 at the University of New Hampshire's Judd Gregg Marine Science Complex in New Castle, New Hampshire. The symposium will focus on developing new methods of AUV operations, data collection, processing and display. The intensive six-day course is by invitation only, and will teach participants about the operational methods of AUVs to collect bathymetric data for the purposes of nautical charting and the data processing techniques required to create hydrographic-quality survey products. Kongsberg Maritime's 'Full Picture' solution has been selected by Chinese and Korean shipbuilders for 13 advanced newbuild offshore vessels with a total value of 330 MNOK. Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Offshore Co. (DSIC), CIMC Raffles (CIMC), Cosco Shipyard (COSCO) and Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard (HDZ) in China, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in Korea are the shipbuilders that have selected deliveries. The new contracts build on a strong 2013 performance in China and Korea where KONGSBERG was chosen for several advanced vessel newbuildings. Kongsberg Maritime will provide Dynamic Positioning (DP), Automation, Navigation and Hydroacoustic positioning.
