Read moreThe Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency recently launched a new icebreaker concept vessel named as "Calypso", equipped with a hybrid motorized removable bow. Powered by Danfoss Editron, the icebreaker is currently moored in Mustola harbor in Lappeenranta, while has started operating on Lake Saimaa and the deep waterways of the surrounding area this winter. As explained, the removable bow, the world’s largest motorized of its kind, has been delivered by Turku Repair Yard as part of the Winter Navigation Motorways of the Sea II project. In fact, the €7.6 million scheme, co-funded by the EU Connecting Europe Facility program, aims to develop and enhance the maritime winter navigation system and its safety during the winter. This new kind of removable bow will make the whole industry more efficient and sustainable, as it will enable virtually any kind of tug to become an icebreaker ship. Our EDITRON system is easily adaptable for future optimizations and we are eager to learn more about our supercapacitor’s ability to control the peak powers. ...as Kari Savolainen, Project Manager at Danfoss Editron, commented. One of its key targets was the creation of a motorized icebreaking removable bow concept, which would enable ice-strengthened vessels to be used ...
Read moreA new guide by ABS focuses on the integration of hybrid electric technologies with conventional power generation to develop a hybrid electric power system (HEPS). A HEPS utilizes multiple sources of power, both non-traditional sources (e.g. batteries, super-capacitors, fuel cells) and traditional sources (e.g. internal combustion engine driven generator sets, shaft generator driven by main engine). It is expected that in the future, other alternate electrical power sources such as solar panels, flywheels, and wind (electric) power systems will be mature enough for integration into the electric power generation systems onboard vessels. Vessels with such arrangements also incorporate specialized power and energy management systems that are relatively new in the industry. The application of HEPS onboard the vessel will serve to reduce NOx, SOx and CO2 emissions. Onboard Documentation The following documentation and data are to be kept onboard for reference by the operator for system operation and troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and safety: Applicable documents/operation and maintenance manuals such as EMS, PMS, BMS, CMS, FCCMSS, etc. Hybrid electric power system operations and maintenance manual; Hybrid electric power system functional test schedules; Records of safety training of personnel for ships’ handling systems, storage, and equipment associated with fuel cell, battery, and ...

Read moreThe Port of Oakland’s largest marine terminal said it has cut diesel emissions from all 13 of its massive yard cranes by 95% after retrofitting them with hybrid electric engines. Terminal operator Stevedoring Services of America (SSA) estimates that the project will eliminate about 1,200 metric tons of GHG emissions annually from each crane.

Read moreDuring the 2020 GREEN4SEA Athens Forum, Mr. Giannis Moraitakis, Senior Business and Sales Development Manager, Wärtsilä, presented how shipping can increase efficiency through the use of hybrid technology. As he described, using big data, long with machine learning and simulation tools, can identify the needs of a vessel, so operators can act accordingly.
