Norwegian ferry operator Boreal Sjø and Wärtsilä Ship Design have entered into a cooperation agreement to develop a hydrogen-powered ferry to the Hjelmeland-Skipavik-Nesvik route in Norway. The ferry will be the world's first in this size to use hydrogen as a fuel.

Jensen Maritime was ordered to design a new 100-foot, Z-Drive hybrid tugboat for Baydelta Maritime. The company will use Rolls-Royce hybrid technology and it will be the first hybrid tug designed by Jensen to enter the construction phase. The hybrid tug is planned to be delivered in the first quarter of 2019.

The new vessel will be 45m long and is currently being built at Baltic Workboats Shipyard in Estonia. It is estimated that it will be delivered with 273kWh of PBES Power 65 battery modules. This technology will be integrated to NORIS’ electrical infrastructure on the vessel.

Last week, the Port of Rotterdam Authority put a new hybrid patrol vessel into operation. This is the RPA 8, a 25 metres vessel that can run on both diesel and diesel-electric. The vessel causes less vessel wake and is much more efficient than other Port Authority vessels.

Port-Liner is currently building the ‘Tesla ships; one more addition to the ongoing fuel transformation. The two giant all-electric barges will be ready by this autumn and will be inaugurated by sailing the Wilhelmina canal in the Netherlands.

The vessel will have reduced exhaust emission levels, when operating in ‘green’ mode, with minimal visible smoke from being produced since the load is being picked-up by the batteries. Moreover, the noise level of the tug will be reduced.

The technology group Wärtsilä announced that it will supply two Wärtsilä HY 2 hybrid power modules for a new escort tug that is being built for the Swedish port of Luleå located on the Gulf of Bothnia in the northern end of the Baltic Sea.

Vard Holdings Limited, part of Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, has secured a NOK 2.7 billion contract for the design and construction of one electric hybrid cruise icebreaker with LNG propulsion cruise vessel, for French cruise company Ponant.
