27 dead as fishing vessel sinks off Honduras

A fishing vessel sank during bad weather on July 3, off Honduras's northern coast. At least 27 fishermen lost their lives, according to Honduras's military. In addition, nine people are still missing, while 55 others have been rescued. Commenting on the incident, Jose Domingo Meza, a spokesperson for the military, noted that the vessel's Capt. Waly started sailing during inappropriate weather for fishing.

According to a circular issued by the The Honduras Directorate of Merchant Marine, ships calling at Puerto Cortes must present, with 24 hours in advance, an Insurance Certificate of Civil Liability against marine pollution events, and a Certificate of Coverage for Response to Incidents of marine pollution issued by a company authorized for this purpose by the maritime authority, to the local office of the General Directorate.
