Hapag-Lloyd informed that it will recycle seven containerships, complying with environmental regulations, in certified shipyards. Namely, Hapag-Lloyd is currently having seven older container ships, with a capacity of 4,101 TEU, which are being recycled in Turkey and China. The respective shipyards are especially equipped and certified to recycle ships in an environmentally friendly manner.

German shipping firm Hapag-Lloyd informed that, starting from April, it will launch a new weekly service between the Saudi Arabian port of Jeddah and the east coast of Africa, called East Africa Service. With this service, the company will be calling at the ports of Mombasa in Kenya and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania for the first time.

Hapag-Lloyd expects transport demand to increase by 4% in 2018, while in the same time, the German shipping group predicts that more shipping firms will proceed to mergers during 2018. After the company's merger with Arab UASC, it could achieve up to 90% of its targeted annual savings in 2018 and 100% in 2019.

The Ottawa Express left the Port of Liverpool, England, on December 21st and docked at Berth 77 at Cast Terminal operated by Montreal Gateway Terminals Partnership, after braving the freezing weather of this beginning of the year.

Germany-based shipping company Hapag-Lloyd announced that it completed the integration of United Arab Shipping Company into the Group, six months after the merger process started. With a fleet of 215 modern container ships, Hapag-Lloyd is now the fifth-largest liner shipping company in the world.

The New York Shipping Exchange informed that German Hapag-Lloyd and French CMA-CGM joined the investment round, and announced additional investments from GE Ventures and Goldman Sachs, marking the completion of Exchange's Series A round of funding, totaling $13 million. 

According to data from the Alphaliner, the biggest container shipping company by number of chartered and owned ships in its fleet is Denmark- based APM-Maersk, with currently 636 ships in service. The second largest fleet is run by MSC. The top-five is completed by France-based CMA-CGM, Chinese COSCO and German-Chilean Hapag-Lloyd.

Hapag-Lloyd and United Arab Shipping Company officially merged, in Hamburg, on May 24. Hapag-Lloyd will remain a publicly traded company registered in Germany with its headquarters in Hamburg. UASC’s 58 vessels will be integrated into the fleet of Hapag-Lloyd and the combined fleet will then include a total of 230 vessels.

Hapag-Lloyd informed that the period of icebergs, drifting out of the Arctic Ocean and into the North Atlantic, starts from April and lasts until August. The authorities recently reported that there are more icebergs this year than usual. The company’s captains keep their vessels south of the drift ice limit, so as to avoid any dangerous collisions.

On Friday, May 5th, Global Container Terminals Canada welcomed the largest container vessel to call the country at GCT Deltaport, located in the Port of Vancouver. GCT Deltaport is the Antwerpen Express’s first-port-of-call directly from the Far East (Hong Kong-Yantian-Ningbo- Shanghai-Pusan-Vancouver).
