In a bid to comply with the IMO 2020 sulphur cap, German container shipping major Hapag-Lloyd announced it has ordered ten hybrid-ready scrubbers to be gradually installed to ten of its 13,000 TEU Hamburg class vessels during 2019 and 2020. In March 2019, the retrofits will start and the first EGCS will be installed to the vessel ‘Hamburg Express’ at Qingdao Beihai shipyard in China.

German container shipping major Hapag-Lloyd revealed details of its new mid-term 'Strategy 2023', which will focus on increased reliability and service quality to drive efficiency in the supply chain and to respond to the new conditions brought by the consolidation trend in recent years. Additional improvements aim to turn the company into a more analytically-driven organisation.

Five of the largest container shipping companies, MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, and Ocean Network Express, are planning to establish an association to pave the way for digitalization, standardization and interoperability of the container shipping industry.

ONE and Hapag-Lloyd have established a Bilateral Strategic Feeder Network Cooperation Agreement, joining forces on feeder services. This agreement has already started on the first trades. Initially, the cooperation will cover specific Intra-Europe and Intra-Asia feeder trade lanes.

Ahead of the 2020 sulphur cap, Hapag Lloyd said that using low-sulphur fuel oil will be the key solution for the company to remain compliant. This fuel however, comes with an increase in fuel costs, something that made Hapag Lloyd establish a Marine Fuel Recovery (MFR) mechanism.

German shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd informed that during September it will introduce four new direct connections from the Port of Mombasa to the UAE and India. The direct connections will include Nhava Sheva (India), Mundra (India), Khor Fakkan (UAE), Jebel Ali (UAE), Mombasa and Dar es Salaam.

Speaking about the upcoming 2020 sulphur cap, Hapag-Lloyd said that this regulation will challenge the entire shipping industry. The company cites three ways to achieve compliance and notes that if this is achieved then the industry will become much greener.

On the aftermath of the polar-bear-shot-dead incident by a Hapag-Lloyd guard, AECO reiterated its guidelines for passengers and guards when encountering polar bears, to ensure that wildlife is not disturbed in this extremely fragile environment, as well as ensuring human safety. 

As Hapag-Lloyd Cruises informed, during the weekend, on a trip ashore in Spitsbergen during a Bremen cruise, a polar bear guard was attacked on land by a polar bear. The guard suffered head injuries, however, he was responsive after the attack and was airlifted. However, the polar bear was shot dead.

Hapag-Lloyd will limit its costs to deal with increasing fuel prices that caused the company to cut its current profit outlook. Namely, as the company's CEO, Rolf Habben Jansen noted, costs increased more than expected, something that puts pressure on the operating margins.
