Leading container lines reinitiate piracy meetings

To keep focus on piracy CMA CGM, MSC, Maersk Line and Hamburg Süd representing 40 percent of the world container shipping industry have met to discuss the piracy threat towards international shipping. The meeting focused on piracy in the Gulf of Aden, the Indian Ocean and West Africa. The cooperation between CMA CGM, MSC, Maersk Line and Hamburg Süd includes information exchange on security measures, piracy policies and procedures as well as coordination with relevant stakeholders."Although we have seen a decline in piracy activity over the past year, piracy continues to be a concern for the shipping industry, and therefore we still need our piracy consensus meetings where we can cooperate on responses to the threat to ensure the safety and security of our seafarers," CMA CGM, MSC, Maersk Line and Hamburg Süd said in a joint statement. At the piracy consensus meeting, CMA CGM, MSC, Maersk Line and Hamburg Süd agreed that the international community's efforts to fight the problem have contributed significantly to the improvement in the situation seen today. Especially the naval presence in the Gulf of Aden and the pursuit of appropriate legal frameworks to ensure pirates are prosecuted and held responsible for their crimes have ...

Hamburg Sud Aims to Reduce CO2 Emissions

Commitment to environmental protection Hamburg Süd is pressing ahead vigorously with its commitment to environmental protection. The shipping group thus decided recently to set itself an objectively measurable environmental target: by 2020 Hamburg Süd is aiming to reduce the CO2e emissions of its owned and chartered container vessels per unit of transport capacity (TEUkm) by 26 per cent.Besides carbon dioxide, the unit of measurement CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) takes account of other climate gases (e.g., methane) produced in the combustion process in line with their effect on the climate."We have always felt committed to the protection of the environment and have launched numerous voluntary initiatives and projects in the past to mitigate environmental impact," said Dr Ottmar Gast, Chairman of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd. "With the self-imposed cut in CO2e emissions we now intend to go a step further and make our environmental commitment clear for all to follow. At the same time, we are confident that the measurable results will enable us to identify further optimization potential in the future."Hamburg Süd aims to reach this target by taking a variety of measures, such as investing in the energy efficiency of owned ships, increasing average vessel size, chartering ...

Hamburg Sud and GL join forces to develop Emission Management System

"GL Emission Manager" will permit detailed evaluation and analysis of fleet data Hamburg Süd and the classification society Germanischer Lloyd are jointly developing an innovative data management system for systematically capturing all environmentally relevant ship operation information. The future "GL Emission Manager" will permit detailed evaluation and analysis of all relevant data of the entire fleet. Hamburg Süd has set itself the goal of creating a valid basis for further reducing the emission of contaminants by its deployed fleet."There is as yet no comparable way of systematically collecting and analysing all environmentally relevant information from vessels in service," says Arnt Vespermann, Member of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd, about the new GL Emission Manager. "It gives us the capability to satisfy the most diverse reporting requirements quickly and easily."The system is to be used throughout Hamburg Süd's entire fleet from the start of 2012 and, in addition to environmentally relevant details, will make other operational information, such as current vessel position, cargo mix, or weather conditions, available on demand. On the data-capture side, the GL Emission Manager will consist of two separate but directly linked parts: the data recorder will be installed on board the vessels to collect all relevant ...
