Hamburg Süd announced that it christened the 'Polar Ecuador' container ship in Antwerp. The ship belongs to a group of four structurally identical vessels in the 'Polar' class that have been built for Hamburg Süd by the Chinese shipyard Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding. The 'Polar Ecuador' will operate in Hamburg Süd’s North Europe - Mexico/Caribbean service (EMCS), which connects Antwerp and other European ports in Ireland, Great Britain and Germany with Mexican and Caribbean ports. 

Hamburg Süd and the China Navigation Company, which is part of the Swire Group, completed the sale of Hamburg Süd’s dry bulk shipping business, which includes Rudolf A. Oetker (RAO) and the bulk activities in Furness Withy (London and Melbourne) and Aliança Navegação e Logística, to China Navigation Company.

Hamburg-based Nauticor, a unit of Linde, reported that the world’s largest LNG bunker vessel, the 7,500-cbm Kairos was officially christened at the Hamburg Cruise Center Steinwerder. The vessel began being constructed in 2016. The vessel was delivered in October 2018, according to Nauticor.

Hamburg Süd announced that it will present its future use of Remote Container Management. Using satellite and mobile radio technology, RCM enables the monitoring of the refrigerated container and the condition of the cargo inside it, including its location, temperature profile, relative humidity, and concentrations of oxygen and CO2.

Port of Hamburg’s terminal operator Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG announced the expansion of its rail terminal. Namely, two extra tracks and two new rail gantry cranes have been added to the rail terminal at the Container Terminal Burchardkai. Now the rail terminal has ten tracks, instead of eight, while the longest trains permitted can be processed on every track.

Mr. Leif Erik Caspersen, Director International Sales, ERMA FIRST, provides recommendations on how to select a suitable BWTS retrofitting. A ballast water treatment, he said, is much complicated as it is especially designed for each vessel. Mr. Caspersen advised that operators should select the systems with the most suitable operation options for their vessels.

While talking at the first SAFET4SEA Conference in Hamburg, Prof. Orestis Schinas, Professor of Shipping and Ship Finance at Hamburg School of Business Administration, talked about the problem of green finance, and shared advice for newbuildings and existing ships. Prof. Schinas noted that decarbonization comes with a price and operators or owners are challenged and faced with the burden.

While talking at the first SAFET4SEA Conference in Hamburg, Mr. Alex Dimitrevich, Regional Crisis Response and Wellness Programme Coordinator in Europe, Sailors’ Society, shared his insight for the association’s Wellness at Sea Programme. Traditionally, he argued, the industry thought of seafarers as only ‘occupational’ human beings, but the current definition of wellness looks at the human being’s holistic nature.

Kühne Logistics University and Hapag-Lloyd announced the launch of the Hapag-Lloyd Center for Shipping and Global Logistics. The centre, focusing on maritime logistics, aims to promote the discourse between international research and the shipping industry.

The inaugural SAFTY4SEA Conference in Hamburg successfully concluded on Wednesday 7th of November, at Empire Riverside Hotel, Hamburg, attracting 160 delegates from a total of 88 organizations.
