Maritime Domain Awareness for Trade – Gulf of Guinea has been made aware of an increased threat of piracy centred in ZONE E within the next 24 – 48 Hrs. 

Pirates have violently attacked a vessel in the Gulf of Guinea, injuring two crew members with another reported missing.

Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh, stated that a reduction in reported cases of piracy in Nigerian waters would end the regime of War Risk Insurance premium on Nigeria-bound cargoes.

A court in Lagos sentenced 10 pirates to 12 years in prison for kidnapping the crew of a Chinese-flagged merchant vessel in 2020.

Pirates kidnapped eight persons from a passenger boat, travelling to Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

The Gulf of Guinea Maritime Collaboration Forum – SHADE (GOG-MCF/SHADE) project was officially launched on 14 July as a new collaborative framework to combat illicit maritime activities in the Gulf of Guinea. 

Federal Republic of Nigeria seeks to establish closer defence and security ties with the Republic of Gabon, as local media sources noted.

IMB received reports of 68 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships globally in the first half of 2021, down from 98 incidents during the same period last year and the lowest number of reported incidents for the first half of any year since 1994.
