NTSB investigation: Fatigue leads to grounding in Alaska

The NTSB issued an investigation report on the grounding of the fishing vessel Freyja while on the Bering Sea, Alaska, in March 2019. The investigation revealed the deckhand failed to monitor the vessel as he fell asleep due to extreme fatigue. 

Brazil drains water from one of Stellar Banner cargo holds

The Brazilian Navy reported that drainage of saltwater from one of the cargo holds of the grounded cargo ship Stellar Banner has been completed. Meanwhile, the Brazilian mining company Vale SA is conducting bathymetric surveys and is assessing the capacity to receive the iron ore load at the incident location.

Debunkering to start for grounded Stellar Banner

Salvors will begin removing bunker fuel from Stellar Banner on March 10. The very large ore carrier (VLOC) had grounded off the coast of Brazil, on February 25. The ship was carrying iron ore.

Cargo vessel stranded near Brazilian port

On 4 March, a soy vessel has been stranded at São Francisco do Sul port, Brazil, Reuters reported. In fact, the vessel  “Aeolian Grace” was loaded with some 65.000 tonnes of soybeans, but a maneuvering problem resulted it unable to leave the port.

Salvors building protection barrier around Golden Ray

On Thursday, contractors are scheduled to begin construction of an environmental protection barrier (EPB) around the car carrier Golden Ray, almost six months after the ship grounded in St. Simons Sound, Georgia.
