During the latest GREEN4SEA Virtual Forum, Dr. Konstantinos Galanis, Chairman of the International Ship Recycling Association, discussed about the European Union Taxonomy and its relationship to the ship recycling, highlighting the fact that the economic activity needs to meet and qualify as an environmentally sustainable solution.

The upcoming entry into force of the EU ETS and CII regulations, part of the ambitious EU environmental agenda aiming to reduce emissions from shipping, is expected to redefine the current landscape of communication between shipowners and charterers, argued Mr. Panos Zachariadis, Technical Director, Atlantic Bulk Carriers Management Ltd., during the 2022 GREEN4SEA Forum that took place in late April.

While there has been some recent progress in the fight against shipping emissions, there are still serious challenges, relating to cost and lack of compliance with standards, noted Keith B. Letourneau, Partner Maritime, BLANKROME, at the 2022 GREEN4SEA Forum, warning that without mandatory reductions, GHG emissions from the maritime sector could increase between 50-250% by 2050.

Standardization is an important step forward for ESG integration in shipping, with divergence between regional and global requirements being a critical issue to consider when thinking about implementation of ESG strategies, speakers agreed at the 2022 GREEN4SEA Forum.

During the 2022 GREEN4SEA Virtual Forum, experts of Session 8 focused on the alternative fuels options that are currently available, highlighting that hydrogen has a great potential, but more work needs to be done for its safety and technical usability as there is need to invest in technology and its transition to acquire know-how.

During the 2022 GREEN4SEA Virtual Forum, Aishwarya Iyer, ESG Manager, RightShip, analyzed the role of ESG in shipping, and how it can affect the sector. Ms. Iyer highlighted the standards that help promote ESG, also citing the challenges that ESG pose to the maritime sector.

Dr. Kostas G. Gkonis, Director / Secretary General, INTERCARGO highlighted that the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) have become the new normal for maritime stakeholders; industry is currently focusing on how to apply a holistic transformation of its operations to address ESG challenges and apply requirements from a monitoring and reporting perspective.

In the latest GREEN4SEA Virtual Forum, the importance of environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) was highly stressed. Mr. Konstantinos Papoutsis, Euronav’s Sustainability Manager gave a presentation to touch upon the disclosing of ESG data performance and shipping finance regulation and initiatives taken by the industry and beyond.
