KVH introduces New TracPhone for mini-VSAT broadband service

KVH Industries, Inc, introduced the TracPhone V3-IP terminal for its mini-VSAT Broadband service. The maritime VSAT antenna now comes with the smallest and most integrated belowdecks equipment - KVH's new Integrated CommBox Modem (ICM), a streamlined unit that includes an IP-enabled antenna control unit, built-in CommBox Ship/Shore Network Manager, and ArcLight spread spectrum modem with IP voice capability, Ethernet switch, and Wi-Fi connectivity. All of the TracPhone V3-IP's belowdecks equipment is built in to a single 2U enclosure. The system is on display and available to order at the Sea Asia conference and exhibition in Singapore this week. KVH's new TracPhone V3-IP costs less, is easier to install, and provides reliability. The system's completely integrated design offers a simple alternative to the complexity inherent in competing maritime VSAT systems, which typically require a local technician to configure a full rack of hardware from different third-party manufacturers of modems, antennas, controllers, switches, adapters, and servers. It also makes the advanced features of KVH's best-of-breed network management solution, the CommBox Ship/Shore Network Manager, available to every TracPhone V3-IP customer without an additional hardware investment. With a compact antenna dish that is just 37 cm (14.5") in diameter, the TracPhone V3-IP brings sophisticated ...

KR launches hull structure analysis software in accordance with CSR-H

The Korean Register (KR) - an IACS member classification society - announces the release of SeaTrust-HullScan, its ground-breaking software solution to analyze and appraise a vessel's hull structure in accordance with the new harmonized common structural rules (CSR-H). SeaTrust-HullScan is a brand new ship design support program that enables ship designers and ship builders to accurately apply IACS CSR-H and all subsequent amendments when designing and constructing a vessel. The software optimizes a ship's design structure by implementing an accurate calculation according to the new rules and generating results that are as close as possible to the target standards set by the user. Automatic modeling in fine mesh analysis and fatigue strength assessment offers enhanced modeling speeds and improved design. Rule loading, corrosion additions and boundary conditions are three basic elements for carrying out direct strength assessments and these are automatically generated. Automation of the entire process leads to a faster integration of the buckling assessment which dramatically saves time and resources. SeaTrust-HullScan was developed in-house and has been rigorously verified with the major Korean shipyards from joint industry projects. It has already won support from the industry for its outstanding user friendliness. The new software is offered in basic ...

Authorities demolish two illegal shipbreaking yards in Bangladesh

The NGO Shipbreaking Platform and its 18 member organisations around the world applaud the Forest Department and the District Administration for removing two shipbreaking yards that had been operating illegally on protected forest land for several years in Chittagong, one of the worlds' biggest toxic ship graveyards located in Southeast Bangladesh. SK Steel and SK Ship Breaking and Recycling were able to lease the land illegally in 2009, chopped down thousands of mangrove trees and started importing end-of-life ships for breaking on the beach. On 6 October 2013, the Supreme Court of Bangladesh declared the yards illegal, ordered them to be evicted and the trees to be replanted. "Finally the Government is facing up to its responsibilities and enforces our environmental law and the Court's decisions," says Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Chief Executive of Platform member organisation BELA (Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association). "Shipbreakers break the law every day by importing ships containing hazardous waste into Bangladesh and having them beached, and we need to stop all illegal operations."
