Maritime Administrations are responsible of making sure that companies offering a GMDSS Shore-Based Maintenance (SBM) service are acceptable according to the IMO Resolution A.702 (17). If a ship owner has chosen the radio equipment to be maintained through a Shore-Based Maintenance Agreement, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has agreed with a series of requirements that must be met by a company that seeks registration as a SBM provider. 

Mr. Alberto Perez, Inmarsat Maritime, notes that the maritime industry has realized the benefits of digitalization. Among many, digital technologies offer transparency which is very important; In this regard, Mr. Perez cites the example of Inmarsat’s Fleet Data which can virtually connect to any sensor, giving full transparency on bills as connectivity costs are included in the service.

Inmarsat is migrating the GMDSS Services, Inmarsat C and Fleet 77, from the Inmarsat-3 satellite constellation to the Inmarsat-4 satellite constellation. During the migration manual intervention on Inmarsat Ship Earth Stations may be necessary. After each phase of the migration the coverage area of these GMDSS services will change.

Under SOLAS Chapter IV, some vessels are required to have 'Ship Radio Stations', which are to be licensed and the vessels must carry certain related documents and publications. The Republic of Marshall Islands updated the requirements of documentation regarding Ship Radio Stations for its vessels. 

Maritime frequencies are protected by a set of rules and procedures. Their use is supported by technical standards, and reports, while there are program aims to safeguard important frequencies used by emergency position indicating radio beacons.

The 99th session of IMO's Maritime Safety Committee concluded on 25 May marking new steps and reviewing older developments towards a safer shipping industry. Autonomous vessels, piracy and armed robbery against ships, the Arctic shipping safety, as well as the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, were key topics on the agenda.
