As part of IMO's strategy to reduce GHG emissions from ships, a meeting of the IMO Global Industry Alliance to Support Low Carbon Shipping (GIA) Task Force took place at IMO Headquarters in London, on 27 November, holding a lively debate on the marine fuel for the future.

The GloMEEP project delivered a training course to help maritime administrations and classification societies in collecting fuel consumption data from ships. The training took place in China, on 14 of November. Fuel consumption data from ships provide crucial information to support IMO’s  efforts to reduce GHG emissions from international shipping.

IMO has developed a new set of toolkits to assess and address emissions from ships and ports. The Ship Emissions Toolkit and Port Emissions Toolkit have been developed under the GEF-UNDP-IMO GloMEEP Project, in collaboration with its strategic partners, IMarEST and IAPH.

The video explains the concept of 'Just-In-Time' arrival, developed by the IMO GloMEEP Global Industry Alliance to support low carbon shipping. Implementing “Just-In-Time” ship operations means ships receive information in advance so they can time their arrival at the berth.

Cutting greenhouse gas emissions from shipping and port operations was at the centre of a workshop hosted by the Maritime Authority of Jamaica. The workshop was part of the activities conducted by Jamaica as one of 10 Lead Pilot Countries and the only country in the Caribbean selected to participate in the GloMEEP Project.

Jamaica is selected to be among the 10 countries that will take part in the Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Partnerships Project, which aims to support the implementation of energy-efficiency measures to reduce GHG emissions from shipping. The other countries are Argentina, China, Georgia, India, Malaysia, Morocco, Panama, Philippines and South Africa.

A strategic partnership of the IMO-GloMEEP and the International Association of Ports and Harbors is helping selected countries to develop port emission inventories and draw up a port emission reduction strategy. A new three-day workshop package on the “Prevention and control of shipping and port air emissions” is being developed as part of the partnership.

The progress made in starting to shape a draft comprehensive IMO strategy on reduction of GHG emissions from ships has been reported to the COP 23 climate change conference, meeting in Bonn, Germany, from 6 to 15 November, by IMO’s Stefan Micallef.

Jointly organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and the IMO, the Future-Ready Shipping 2017 Conference will bring together maritime leaders to discuss the latest developments in maritime energy-efficient technologies and also study existing collaboration models and sustainability.

A new global project aiming to help protect marine ecosystems from the negative effects of invasive aquatic species has been given the go-ahead for preparation, according to IMO. The GloFouling Partnerships project will focus on the implementation of the IMO Guidelines for the control and management of ships’ biofouling.
