James Hookham, Secretary General and Director of the Global Shippers Forum, advocates for a a more customer-centric culture that would help establishing a robust relationship for carriers to invest in the expenses associated with digitalization and decarbonization.

Current measures of competitiveness in the liner shipping market are incomplete and inaccurate, failing to take full account of the degree of co-operation between carriers which results in a more highly concentrated industry. 

With the official implementation of the 2020 sulphur cap, the Global Shippers Forum (GSF) launched advice, assisting importers and exports who will have to deal with the demands for surcharges from shipping lines seeking to cover their costs of compliance.

The Global Shippers Forum (GSF) commented on ITF's Transport Outlook 2019, noting that sustainable solutions to the environmental challenges faced by global shippers need to be found, without stifling economic development. 

The European Shippers' Council raised concerns about the implementation of the Emergency Bunker Surcharge by carriers. Carriers explain the introduction of this surcharge by the increase of the bunker oil price. However, ESC said that the use of such measure is not justified.

Recently the MSC and Maersk implemented Emergency Bunker Surcharge due to high bunker prices. Now, the Global Shippers Forum says that this is a negative development and needs to be changed. Chris Welsh, Secretary General of GSF noted that the industry needs to be more transparent about bunker surcharge costs.

The Global Shippers’ Forum and Cargo iQ have agreed to work together to implement the Cargo iQ quality management system and promote sustainability in airfreight. The agreement outlines six areas where the two groups will work together towards a more efficient, quality-driven, and secure air cargo supply chain, and explores methods for industry and shippers to better meet customer needs.

  The Global Ocean Commission (GOC) welcomed the strong position on marine security and the protection of the marine environment expressed in the G7 Leaders’ Declaration and related Action Plan. GOC commends G7 leadership for highlighting the health and governance of the ocean as priority issues. GOC hopes that the G7 countries follow up from on this Declaration and lead accelerated action to reverse the current cycle of ocean decline. Regenerating and protecting the marine environment is vital to shifting the world onto a sustainable path, which is why the Commission fully supports the G7’s concrete commitments to tackling marine litter. GOC also notes the G7 pledge to promote a transparent, precautionary approach to deep sea mining. Like the new G7 Action Plan to Combat Marine Litter, the Global Ocean Commission stressed the growing problem of plastic pollution in its 2014 report and has been calling for coordinated, targeted action to eliminate plastics entering the ocean. GOC said it is ready to extend assistance or support to the G7 as they implement their important Action Plan.   Global Shippers' Forum has welcomed progress made by the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) 68 on the development of a data collection system for ships to help reduce carbon emissions. At MEPC 67 in October, delegates agreed that a system based on fuel consumption only could be introduced. But at MEPC 68 a plan to consider energy efficiency metrics such as transport work was supported.  This will help shippers report their emissions in the supply chain. An inter-sessional group will now be formed to conduct an analysis of the different types of activity data that could be calculated and to evaluate the options for whether energy efficiency metrics can be applied. Secretary General of the GSF, Chris Welsh, said: "We are pleased to see that energy efficiency metrics are back on the agenda and will be subject to further investigation.  Overall this is a very pleasing outcome and GSF has made progress in raising the profile of shippers' needs in this debate."
