South Korean marine supplier Tas Global Co., Ltd and Danish environmental consultant DHI Water and Environment are the latest entities to join the Global Industry Alliance (GIA) for Marine Biosafety, which now counts seven members. 

A desktop trial by members of the IMO-led GIA alliance at the Port of Rotterdam, on 10 July, verified that Just-In-Time ship operations can considerably help to cut emissions. This can be achieved by communicating in advance the relevant information to the ship about the requested time of arrival.

The Global Industry Alliance (GIA) -a key IMO initiative supporting ship decarbonization- is set to be extended to 2023, in line with the timeframe of IMO’s Initial GHG Strategy. The extension follows two years of good progress by the initiative, whose 6th Task Force meeting took place in Gothenberg, Sweden, on 25 June.

The Panama Canal Authority and Danish shipping company Moller – Maersk A/S are the latest entities to join the IMO-supported Global Industry Alliance to Support Low Carbon Shipping. The new members signed up to the GIA during the fifth meeting of the GIA Taskforce at IMO Headquarters, on 15 March.

'Just-In-Time' operations (JIT) contribute to cutting emissions, by limiting the time vessels passively spend outside ports. Although JIT is helpful to the environment and helps reduce costs, there are multiple operational and contractual barriers to overcome before this could be implemented globally. IMO’s GIA, focusing on the vessels that can already implement JIT, gathered with a variety of industry stakeholders to discuss with what means they can accomplish JIT globally. 

The second meeting of the Global Industry Alliance Task Force – a partnership of key maritime stakeholders pursuing low carbon shipping – took place at IMO Headquarters, gathering 20 industry representatives from across 16 member companies to discuss how to make further progress on on-going GIA-funded activities.

On September 25, Bureau Veritas  and Port of Rotterdam officially joined the Global Industry Alliance, which is a new initiative by IMO with the aim to gather maritime industry leaders to support energy efficient and low carbon maritime practices.
