Ballard Power Systems Europe A/S, a subsidiary of Canadian fuel cell solutions provider Ballard Power Systems, announced establishment of a Marine Center of Excellence, dedicated to fuel cell marine applications at the company’s engineering, manufacturing and service facility in Hobro, Denmark.

The European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA) conducted a workshop based on the practical implementation of measures to reduce GHG emissions, which was attended by representatives of the European Commission, the European Maritime Safety Agency, the Member States, as well as industry stakeholders and environmental organisations.

During his presentation at the last GREEN4SEA Conference, Mr. Paul Flaherty, Director, Fleet & Technical Operations, Navigator Gas, gave emphasis on ethane as a marine fuel. Mr. Flaherty also presented the case of Navigator Aurora, which was the first conversion of LNG-I engine to an ethane burning GI-E engine.

At the last GREEN4SEA Conference, Mr. Panos Zachariadis, Technical Director, Atlantic Bulk Carriers Management Ltd, provides an overview of alternative fuels such as natural gas, methane and hydrogen. He presents the pros and cons of each fuel, but highlights that new technology is necessary to make IMO’s goals reality.

BP announced that it has created a $100 million fund for projects that will deliver new greenhouse gas emissions reductions in its upstream oil and gas operations. The Upstream Carbon Fund will provide further support to BP's work generating sustainable greenhouse gas emissions reductions in its operations. Total funds of up to $100 million will be available during the course of the next three years.

CMA CGM ordered 10 15.000 TEUs container ships. Five of them fuelled by LNG, and five with scrubbers, from China State Shipbuilding Corporation.The vessels will be delivered from 2021, to replace 10 other vessels. They will also be used on the Asia-Mediterranean lines.

IKEA Transport & Logistics Services, CMA CGM, the GoodShipping Program and the Port of Rotterdam announced the successful refuelling of the CMA CGM White Shark with sustainable marine bio-fuel oil. On March 23, CMA CGM announced that the refuelling trial was successful.

Western Australia's EPA announced it is withdrawing its revised GHG guidelines from application. EPA's Environmental Factor Guidance, released in early March, aimed to help proponents of significant proposals in the State prepare for an environmental assessment by the EPA.

While speaking at the last SAFETY4SEA Conference in Cyprus, Mr. Ioannis Efstratiou, Senior Marine Surveyor, Cyprus Shipping Deputy Ministry, shared his predictions on the maritime landscape in the near future, focusing on the environmental challenges relating to 2020 sulphur cap, GHG emissions, ship dismantling and BWM regulations.

IKEA Transport & Logistics Services, CMA CGM, the GoodShipping Program and the Port of Rotterdam will collaborate in a first of its kind partnership to test and scale the use of sustainable marine bio-fuel oil. The test will begin with a bunkering of the marine bio-fuel oil on a CMA CGM container vessel on March 19th. If the pilot is successfully completed, then the intention would be to put the equivalent of at least all of IKEA's containers out of Rotterdam on biofuel.
