Greek Shipowners back limit on main engine power for emissions reduction

In line with IMO’s Initial Strategy for decarbonization of shipping, Greece has come forward with a concrete proposal for a short-term, prescriptive measure to improve the operational energy efficiency of existing ships, to be considered at the forthcoming meeting of the IMO’s intersessional technical group in November.

New fuels, energy efficiency to be key in meeting IMO GHG goals

As part of its Energy Transition Outlook 2019, DNV GL provided an independent outlook on the maritime energy future examining how the energy transition will affect the industry. The report forecasts that new fuels, alongside energy efficiency, will play a key role on meeting the IMO greenhouse gas ambitions.

Fujitsu, Kongsberg launch AI fuel optimization service

Fujitsu and Kongsberg Digital have collaborated to tackle GHG emissions, using an AI Fuel Optimization Service. Namely, the new digital web service will allow shipping companies to reduce fuel costs for large ships and comply with new low sulphur fuel regulations, without needing complex ship re-engineering or major expenditure by ship owners and operators.

IMO strengthens energy efficiency targets for some ships

During the 74th session of its Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 74), concluded Friday, IMO agreed stricter energy efficiency targets for certain types of ships, as part of its efforts to reduce shipping emissions. 

IMO focuses on technologies to reduce GHG from ships

Experts from the five Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres in the GMN network met for their second annual meeting, on 22-26 October, in London, UK, to promote ship energy-efficiency measures and technology transfer, under the GMN project, funded by the European Union and run by IMO.

Energy efficiency ranked as most impactful for shipping in next 10 years

During its latest Annual Summit in Hong Kong on 3-4 October 2018, the Global Maritime Forum presented its Global Maritime Issues Monitor 2018 report, in which maritime leaders ranked ‘energy efficiency’ and ‘choice of emissions reduction strategies’ as most likely to influence the sector in the next 10 years.

Hull cleaning can improve ships’ energy efficiency

A new paper addresses the impact of periodic hull cleaning on oil tankers concluding that periodic hull cleaning leads to a significant reduction in the daily fuel consumption and hull cleaning energy efficiency effect is greater when the vessel is sailing laden rather than in the ballast condition.
