Following the Turkish Foreign Ministry's statement, ten Turkish seafarers onboard the Paksoy 1 freighter were kidnapped by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea, on Saturday night, July 13. The ship is now on anchorage at the port Tema, Ghana. The Turkish Foreign Ministry is closely collaborating with authorities in Nigeria and Ghana to safely release the crew. 

The Singaporean-flagged container ship 'Maersk Cape Coast' became the first commercial vessel, 'Maersk Cape Coast' to have docked at the Terminal 3 at Ghana's Tema Port, after three years of expansion and modernization works to complete the first two berths.

Fishing is considered one of the most dangerous occupations in the world and, in spite of improvements in technology, the loss of life in the fisheries sector is unacceptably high.  In order to improve the safety of fishers and fishing vessels, IMO has established, over the years, various initiatives, culminating with the adoption of the Cape Town Agreement of 2012.

Since 2017, two Ghanaians and 11 Indian nationals have been detained, along with the DLB Sea Horizon vessel at the Sekondi Naval Base in Ghana due to a payment dispute. Reports say that WAG SPV, the American owner of the Panamanian vessel, had to pay the port charges accrued over the period, an amount in the region of $1.5 million.

The Environmental Justice Foundation filmed illegal activities as they took place at sea and undertook first-hand monitoring at ports and data analysis to present the full catastrophic scale of this form of organised crime. 'Saiko' is a form of illegal fishing, where foreign trawlers target the staple catch of Ghanaian canoe fishers and sell this stolen fish back to local communities at a profit.

According to the Ghana Shipper's Authority, the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana highlighted that more opportunities should arise for women participating in the maritime sector, mostly in Africa, to take advantage of the potentials of the continent’s blue economy.

Enni announced on Thursday, May 9, a gas and condensate discovery in CTP-Block 4, offshore Ghana. The well on the Akoma exploration project had an estimated volume between 550 and 650 bfc of gas and 18-20 mmbbl of condensate. 

Denmark and Ghana have cooperated on e-navigation solutions, implementation of international regulations and training of tugboat captains since 2015. This week, the two countries extended the strategic sector cooperation until 2021. The overall purpose of the strategic sector cooperation between Denmark and Ghana is to boost capacity building in the maritime sector that benefits both countries.

All seven ship-to-shore and 20 RTG ultra-modern gantry cranes have arrived for installation in the Port of Tema, Ghana, as part of a $1 billion investment by APM Terminals and partners. With crane commissioning and operator training now taking place, the Port is on schedule to open on 28 June 2019. 

Reducing shipping emissions in Africa could be reduced by up to 75% by applying operational measures and implementing available technologies, which can only be achieved if maritime nations join forces to create awareness on the deteriorating effects of shipping pollution, said Ghana's Deputy Minister for Transport.
