Germany's Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation (BSU) issued its annual report recording a slight increase in marine casualties in 2018, but most incidents involved only material damage. There were no major disasters involving German flagged ships or in German waters last year.

Germany is the latest newly-added member in IMO's treaty for safe and environmentally-sound ship recycling – the Hong Kong Convention. Mr. Reinhard Klingen, Director-General Waterways and Shipping in the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure of Germany, met IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim at IMO Headquarters, London, 16 July, to deposit the instrument of accession.

AIDA Cruises added Bremerhaven to its port calls, as AIDAcara made its maiden call in the city, on July 13. During the occasion, Captain Manuel Pannzek welcomed numerous guests from the city, port management and the tourist industry for the traditional plaque ceremony. 

The world’s largest shipping associations, BIMCO and the German Shipowners Association, VDR, who represent the fourth-largest merchant fleet in the world, have confirmed chairmanship of Propulsion & Future Fuels 2019. Delegates will be able to learn, discuss and share the latest developments in power efficiency and propulsion technology, alternative low flashpoint and low carbon fuels with key industry figures.

German Transport Minister Volker Wissing visited the Port of Rotterdam during a three-day delegation trip to the Netherlands. Mr. Wissing and Emile Hoogsteden, Vice President of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, highlighted the importance of the Rhine Corridor and its ports for the transport of goods to Rhineland-Palatinate and Europe.

In the first half of 2019, the share of sun, wind and other renewable sources in the coverage of electricity consumption in Germany reached the 44% for the first time, while, in the first half of 2018, the share of renewables in electricity consumption was 39%.

German LNG Terminal GmbH will commence the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) prequalification process this month. The Terminal announced that potential EPC contractors interested in participating in the project on or before 1 st July 2019 will receive a prequalification package.

Around 50 activists, with banners reading 'Cruises kill climate', delayed the Holland America Line-operated 'Zuiderdam', from departing the North Sea port of Kiel, on June 9. The ship managed to leave the port after six hours, heading to Copenhagen, as the police temporarily detained 46 activists, some of whom climbed onto the ship and onto a harbourside crane.

A recently restored wooden sailing ship sunk as it collided with a container ship in Hamburg. Because of the quick response of five rescue boats which where in the area when the accident happened, all 43 passengers were rescued. The two ships collided on the River Elbe after a failed tack led the sailing ship into the container ship.

Spirit of Discovery completed its conveyance across the river Ems on May 26 at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. After sailing through the Ems barrier, the ship reached the Emden sea lock, with the help of tugs. The cruise ship is the first of two vessels ordered from Meyer Werft by Saga Cruises. It has an overall length of 236 meters and a width of 31.2 meters.
