Georgia Ports Have Record Month for Tonnage

Containerized cargo measured in tons increased 8.3 percent from a year ago The Georgia Ports Authority handled a record 2.37 million tons of cargo in March, including 2.03 million tons of containerized cargo.Containerized cargo measured in tons increased 8.3 percent from a year ago. Overall cargo tonnage for the month beat the previous record, set in October 2010. Container volume totaled 259,795 20-foot-equivalent units in March, up 9.1 percent from a year earlier.During the first nine months of its fiscal year, GPA terminals at Savannah and Brunswick handled 19.5 million tons of cargo, an increase of 280,035 tons from a year earlier. Containers accounted for 16.5 million tons in 2.2 million 20-foot-equivalent container units,, with an export-to-import ratio of 53.71 percent to 46.29 percent.Shipments of auto/machinery units totaled 57,001 units, a 30 percent increase from a year earlier and a 79 percent increase from March 2010. For the fiscal year to date, the Port of Brunswick has handled 388,192 units, ranking it third behind Los Angeles and New York-New Jersey.Source: The Journal of Commerce
