Four new Super Post Panamax ship-to-shore cranes arrived at Garden City Terminal Monday, bringing the Port of Savannah’s total to 26, more than any other terminal in the U.S. The enormous cranes can work the largest ships calling on the U.S. East Coast, reaching across vessels 22 containers wide.

The Georgia Ports Authority’s (GPA) Port of Savannah has reached its busiest October ever for loaded containers, moving 1.01 million twenty-foot equivalent container units, an increase of 40,545 TEUs compared to the same period in 2015.

After being closed last week due to Hurricane Matthew, the Savannah River channel reopened for commercial traffic, with 11 vessels transiting the channel by mid-afternoon, nine of which will be worked at Garden City Terminal and two at Ocean Terminal, according to the Georgia Ports Authority

At the Georgia Ports Authority board meeting, the Executive Director Griff Lynch reported that the GPA achieved an August record of 330,846 twenty-foot equivalent container units, a robust increase of 5 percent compared to August 2015.

The MOL Benefactor is the first vessel to call on Savannah through the new locks of the expanded Panama Canal. At a capacity of 10,100 twenty-foot equivalent container units, the Benefactor is also the largest ship ever to call the Port of Savannah.

At the GPA board meeting, Executive Director Curtis Foltz reported a 16.6 percent increase in container volumes

Container traffic leaps nearly 28% The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) increased containerized cargo in March by 27.8 percent compared to the same month a year ago, for an additional 72,499 twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs).For the first time ever, the Port of Savannah moved 333,058 TEUs in a single month, surpassing its previous monthly record set in October 2014 by more than 21,000 TEUs."We are moving record volumes while maintaining excellent service levels for our customers," said GPA Executive Director Curtis Foltz. "Our March numbers have once again demonstrated the scale, flexibility and efficiency of the Garden City Terminal. Freight handling remained fluid, even with demand well above forecasts.""A 28 percent increase in container volume shows the level of trust cargo owners have in our efficient ports, and translates into jobs for Georgia and the U.S. Southeast," said GPA Board Chairman James Walters.
