Philippines-based International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) has inaugurated the newly-expanded Batumi International Container Terminal (BICT) in Georgia. The multipurpose terminal includes the waterside and landside areas, aiming to optimize the process of existing cargo flows and installing additional capacity.

Oil and oil-related shipments from Georgia’s Black Sea port of Batumi fell 51.2 % in 2018 compared to 2017 according to Reuters. An amount of crude oil was re-routed to the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline and to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium in 2018, whereas some fuel oil was sent to the port of Taman in Russia and Georgia’s other Black Sea port of Kulevi.

The Georgia Ports Authority announced it is set to reach 4.36 million TEUs handled in 2018, its highest volumes ever in a calendar year. The performance would mean an increase of 8% (312,385 TEUs) compared to 2017. Meanwhile, it is the 25th consecutive month the GPA has posted positive year-over-year growth.

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) achieved a 12% increase in containerized trade at the Port of Savannah during September. It also announced a 37.6% increase in Ro-Ro trade at the Port of Brunswick. Namely, the Port of Savannah handled 364,090 TEUs, an increase of nearly 39,000 TEUs over September 2017.

Governor Nathan Deal, state officials and more than 350 business and civic leaders officially opened the Appalachian Regional Port in Northwest Georgia. Located in Murray County, the new facility will provide logistics solutions in a four-state region and remove an estimated 50,000 trucks and 15 million truck miles. 

The Georgia Ports Authority announced that it achieved records in total tonnage and twenty-foot equivalent container units handled in Fiscal Year 2018, which ended in June. GPA handled a record 4.2 million TEUs, for 8.4% increase year-over-year, or 325,000 additional units.   

The first of Georgia Ports Authority’s four new Neo-Panamax cranes started their operations this week, bringing GPA’s operating fleet to 27. The super-sized crane is tall enough to lift containers 152 feet above the dock. The crane started work on Wednesday on a 13,300 TEU container unit Hapag Lloyd vessel.

Talking at the Georgia Foreign Trade Conference Monday, Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Griff Lynch presented a plan to double container handling capacity to 10 million TEUs at Garden City Terminal over the next 10 years. The new plan will enable the port to handle 10 million twenty-foot equivalent container units.

The Georgia Ports Authority recently announced that it showed double digit growth in total cargo in February 2017, moving 2.94 million tons across all docks – a 10 percent increase over February 2016, and second only to January’s 3.01 million tons.

The Georgia Ports Authority and the Virginia Port Authority have joined hands in order to file with the Federal Maritime Commission to create new agreement which encourages voluntary cooperation in the areas of operational and supply chain efficiencies, safety, communications and customer service.
