Germany's gas imports decreased by 9% in November 2018 in comparison to the same month in 2017, according to Reuters. Yet, imports during the first 11 months, from January to November, experienced an increase of 9% than the same period , a year earlier.

According to local media reports, the Chinese authorities stopped a gas leak from a South Korean liquefied petroleum gas tanker, at Dongying Anchorage, Shandong Province, China, Bohai sea on January 14. The leak occurred after the ship didn't manage to shut down the valve for one of its cargo tanks. The master notified authorities and asked for anchorage, to fix the valve.

On December 16, Equinor along with its partners sbegan the production from the Aasta Hansteen gas field in the Norwegian Sea. On December 17, gas from the Aasta Hansteen field is available to the market for the first time and together with the Polarled pipeline the field opens a new region for gas export to Europe.

Qatar announced its decision to leave OPEC on January 1, as the country's state oil company, Qatar Petroleum, informed. This is part of Qatar's attempts to give emphasis on natural gas production, the Minister of state for energy affairs, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, explained.

Marine shipping activity and residual fuel oil demand were supported by US importers who were building inventory ahead of the holiday season. According to a new report by IEA, major oil and gas exporters have experienced many disruptions recently, but a new commitment to reform and economic diversification will be crucial to deal with with the changing dynamics of global energy. According to IEA's third annual Global Gas Security Review, despite the improvements in LNG flexibility, uncertainties remain for the future evolution of gas markets. This includes a risk of insufficient investment in production and infrastructure capacity, or questions regarding future shipping capacity growth.

Speaking at Gastech, Maarten Wetselaar from Shell explained why the oil major has set a target to keep its methane emissions for oil and gas, below 0.2 % by 2025, noting that the long-term role of gas in the energy mix depends on good management of methane emissions.
