FURUNO training centres expanded in UAE and Italy

The FURUNO NavSkills network of training centers has been expanded with a further 2 locations in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates and Mola di Bari, Italy. In the UAE, it is FURUNO's long-term exclusive distributor IMTECH MARINE/Radio Holland Middle East, who has set up a training facility in the building where they have their principal operation, in the emirate of Sharjah. IMTECH/RHME is currently the only NavSkills center in the Middle East. The vision of IMTECH/RHME in the field of training is to offer its customers a package solution, covering equipment sales, installation, service and operator training. The location is in one of the primary hubs of the tanker industry and it is foreseen that the possibility of offering training in connection with crew changes can be a great benefit to the tanker industry. The fact that other shipping segments are growing in the area will only support the efforts and provide further opportunities. Starting its operation in October 2013, IMTECH/RHME training center is able to provide training on both the FEA-2X07 and FMD-3200/3300 ECDIS models, with a capacity of 4 simultaneous FEA-trainees and 2 FMD-trainees. In Italy, FURUNO has the training center THESI CONSULTING becoming a part of the NavSkills ...

ABB, Van Oord work together for energy efficiency

ABB has signed a three-year international maintenance contract with Van Oord, a worldwide contractor for dredging, marine engineering and offshore projects (oil, gas and wind). "The crucial benefit of this agreement is that it enables greater efficiency with regard to maintenance. The aim is to enhance the technical performance of our engines and optimise overhaul processes, which together will result in lower energy consumption and a cut in emissions," said Jaap de Jong, Director, Ship Management at Van Oord. "The reduction of CO2 and SOx is of vital importance, and Van Oord is committed to delivering a valuable contribution to that goal. The agreement reflects the new Van Oord strategy in which we want to be sustainable and an economical fleet manager," added Jaap de Jong. "Under this contract, we will service 140 turbochargers during a three-year period," said Rolf Bosma, General Manager ABB Turbocharging Benelux."Van Oord had been looking for a maintenance partner for ships' engine turbochargers for some time. We have clustered a number of services into a 'value added' package. For each individual location and vessel, we create tailor-made planning, and Van Oord can precisely manage its budgets around this." The main focus of the agreement is to ensure ...

ABB wins order of energy management systems for Balearia ferry

ABB has won an order from Spanish ferry operator Baleària to supply energy management systems for one of its largest vessel. ABB's advisory software will be installed onboard the ferry Martin i Soler, with an option to extend the project to two further vessels in the Baleària fleet. Baleària's installation will cover dynamic trim optimization and hull condition monitoring. The package will help the vessel operator to optimize required propulsive power and forecast hull and propeller fouling, with both contributing to reduced fuel consumption. By reducing fuel consumption, ABB will also help Baleària to reduce the vessel's environmental emissions. ABB's trim optimization system dynamically measures actual trim and advises the crew on steering adjustments via easy-to-understand and user-friendly displays. All data generated onboard is transferred to a cloud-based application for vessel benchmarking. This can provide management onshore with full visibility of energy consumption across the entire fleet. "Baleària and ABB are expecting over 2% savings in propulsion power used at sea through the installation of the trim optimization system and hull monitoring, which will have the same impact in the fuel consumption and consequently reduce emissions." says Mr. Guillermo Alomar, Baleària's, Fleet Manager. Baleària operates ferries connecting the four Balearic ...

UKHO launches new Large-Scale Routeing Chart

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office is launching a new large-scale routeing chart covering the busy shipping waters of Vietnam, Indonesia and the Malacca Strait. Routeing Chart 5141 is the latest addition to the UKHO's routeing chart series and will be published on 27 February 2014. As well as covering a very busy shipping area, Routeing Chart 5141 has been compiled in a larger scale than the UKHO's existing routeing charts and features more detailed and up-to-date meteorological and currents information. This includes a new method for displaying currents information, which has been designed by the UKHO to allow at-a-glance recognition alongside greater accuracy and resolution. Routeing Chart 5141 includes a number of features to support safe and efficient voyage planning: Larger Scale - 1:10,000,000 scale to provide greater resolution and detail than smaller-scale routeing charts. High Density Currents arrows and wind roses are shown with an increased density over smaller-scale routeing charts, providing a higher-resolution representation of the data. Up-to-Date Data - New currents information is derived from forecasts and readings taken between 2000 and 2010, and with meteorological information newly sourced from the Met Office. Currents Grid - Currents data is displayed on a grid to provide a more ...
