New standard in advanced antifoulings

  PPG Protective and Marine Coatings has announced SIGMA SAILADVANCE, a new range of high performance, antifoulings suitable for a variety of operating conditions. The range currently comprises four coatings, including SIGMA SAILADVANCE RX and GX, two completely new formulations based on PPG’s own patented technologies. These antifoulings are based on self-release binder technology using Controlled Surface active Polymers (CSPs) which provide a self-lubrication and self-release mechanism to the coating. CSP acts on the coating/water interface as a lubricant, which supports laminar flow, thereby lowering the hull friction when the ship is sailing and delivering fuel savings averaging five per cent. In addition, CSPs create a ‘slippery surface’ that increases the resistance to fouling when the ship is not sailing and, extending potential idle days. Defence forces unveil innovative kite system at SeaFest

  Innovative kite technology which can use smart sensors developed by the Irish Defence Forces and partners, was demonstrated to Mr Alex White TD, Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources at SeaFest in Cork. The enormous power generating  kites (20m2), using state-of-the-art smart sensor technology, offer a sustainable solution to ship journeys by not only assisting speed, but also providing greatly improved visibility to aid navigation and security. The project is supported by the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources through the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), and Enterprise Ireland, through its Commercialisation Fund Programme.  The ICT solution will assist the Irish Naval Service as the sensors are hoisted on large kites 300 metres above naval vessels, enhancing ship propulsion, generating energy and dramatically improving the surveillance range by up to 15 times. This will allow a vessel patrol a vast sea area without the necessity to cruise long distances, saving on fuel, manpower costs and emissions. Other applications for the technology exist in environmental monitoring, maritime forecasting and data transmission from ocean energy devices. Fuel-saving upgrade package ordered for Odfjell tankers

  MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Propeller & Aft Ship organisation has won an order to retrofit and upgrade a series of 11 × 37,500 dwt vessels from the Odfjell chemical tanker fleet. The vessels are of the Kværner Class and are due to dock during 2015-17, at which time the upgrades will be implemented. The first vessel, ‘M/T Bow Clipper’, will dock and be upgraded in August 2015. Each vessel has an MAN B&W two-stroke engine powering a four-bladed, controllable-pitch propeller and a PTO-driven shaft alternator. The vessels’ new service speed at reduced main-engine output – combined with the implementation of MAN’s highly-efficient Kappel propeller blades, a fairing cone and a pre-fabricated rudder bulb kit – will all contribute to power savings and reduced exhaust-gas emissions. The Kappel blades, fairing cone and rudder bulb are designed and customised for the tanker’s hull and rudder designs. HHI puts its fuel saving propeller attachment into service

  Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), announced its fuel saving propeller attachment, Hi-FIN, proves beneficial to shipowners and operators. After a year-long trial of the energy-saving device installed on a 162,000 m3 LNG carrier ordered from Maran Gas, HHI found that Hi-FIN can save up to 2.5 % of fuel in comparison with the same type of vessels without Hi-FIN. If the fuel saving ratio is calculated on the basis of an 8,600 TEU containership, the owners or operators of the containership can save about $750,000 per year or $19 million for 25 years, an estimated lifetime of the ship. The energy-saving device attached at the hub of the propeller generates countering swirls that offset the swirls generated by the propeller, and thus improves propulsion efficiency. HHI has won orders of Hi-FIN for over 30 ships to date, and the company expects more orders now that it can install the device on broader types of ships from LNG carriers to almost all types of ships including VLCC, LPG carriers and containerships. Hempel launches new antifouling products

Building on the industry proven GLOBIC and DYNAMIC range of antifouling systems,  marine coatings manufacturer Hempel announces the launch of two new antifouling products for dry-dockings and new buildings which deliver fuel savings of up to 3% and provide added flexibility to shipowners and yards. GLOBIC 8000 is a brand new hydrolysing self-polishing antifouling product that fits neatly between the existing GLOBIC 6000 and GLOBIC 9000 antifouling systems. It builds on proven GLOBIC technology to deliver premium performance at a reasonable price. It incorporates Hempel’s nano acrylate technology which delivers a fine polishing control mechanism to bring the integral biocides to the surface at a stable rate ensuring a clean hull. GLOBIC 8000 can be used on all vessels at all speeds but its nano acrylate technology binder makes it particularly effective for slow-steaming operations because of its instant activation of polishing and biocide leaching. EU Sulphur Directive offers opportunity for innovation in fuel saving technologies

With most ship owners switching to Marine Gas Oil inside designated Emission Control Areas as of January 1st 2015, the cost of fuel could rise by up to 50%, so all measures to reduce fuel consumption are vital. Research and field testing has shown that the latest developments in engine lubrication and unique marine energy management systems can add more than a 15% improvement in fuel efficiency, proving that even the smallest modification at the right time can add up to big savings.  The pro’s and con’s of the three options for the shipping industry to comply with the new Sulphur Directive (1. Converting to Marine Gas Oil, 2. Installing an exhaust cleaning system onboard or 3.
