NASSCO to construct additional dual fuel tanker for APT

General Dynamic NASSCO, has entered into a contract with an affiliate of American Petroleum Tankers (APT), for the design and construction of an additional 50,000 deadweight ton LNG-conversion-ready product carrier with a 330,000 barrel cargo capacity. Construction is scheduled to begin the fourth quarter of 2015, with delivery scheduled for the second quarter of 2017. This new tanker, supported by a long-term charter, will be constructed at the NASSCO shipyard in San Diego, meeting the Jones Act requirement that ships carrying cargo between U.S. ports be built in U.S. shipyards. This new 610-foot-long tanker is a continuation of the ECO MR tanker design, which delivers improved fuel efficiency and incorporates the latest environmental protection features, including a Ballast Water Treatment System. Including this order, NASSCO is now under contract for the design and construction of eight tankers: five for American Petroleum Tankers and three for Seabulk Tankers, Inc. All eight ships are being designed by DSEC, a subsidiary of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) of Busan, South Korea. MHI delivers eco-friendly cargo passenger ship

On June 4 Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) delivered the cargo-passenger ship "Tachibana-Maru" to Tokai Kisen at its Shimonoseki Shipyard and Machinery Works. The vessel is a "super eco-ship" with a high-efficiency propulsion system that achieves outstanding energy savings, environmental load reduction, and enhanced passenger comfort and safety. The ship also features a fresh new color scheme of yellow ocher and olive green designed by Ryohei Yanagihara, a well-known Japanese illustrator who is also an honorary captain at Tokai Kisen. The cargo-passenger ship measures 118.0 meters (m) in length overall (LOA), 17.0m in width, and 8.95m in height (5.40m in draft). The 5,681 gross tonnage vessel has a service speed of 19.0 knots per hour (about 35.2km/hour). MHI began construction of the ship in March 2013 and launched it in November of the same year. The ship will be put into service on the route between Tokyo and the Izu Islands on June 27, 2014. The ship employs a tandem-hybrid contra-rotating propeller (CRP) propulsion system developed by MHI. Tsuneishi release new bulker with reduced wind resistance

Tsuneishi Shipbuilding has brought to market the TESS64 AEROLINE, a D/W 63,700mt type Bulk Carrier that is equipped with the new AEROLINE technology to reduce wind resistance. AEROLINE is a new technology for reducing wind resistance, which combines the cut-corner design for the accommodation corner in previous models with a newly developed streamlined shape for the fore upper bow, for a 10% reduction in wind resistance. The fore upper bow has been rounded, giving the ship a stylish streamlined design. While nearly covering the navigation patterns of the TESS58 vessels, which are the largest in the TESS : Tsuneishi Economical Standard Ship, HANDYMAX Series of over 300 ships built so far, this new model is 10 meters longer, which enables a boost in deadweight to the 60,000-ton class for improved transport efficiency. EGR boiler from Alfa Laval is ready for testing

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) has firmly shown its ability to comply with Tier III NOx limits, which will enter into force in January 2016. Over 1000 hours of EGR operation have now been achieved aboard the Maersk Cardiff, a container newbuild from A.P. Moller-Maersk with a two-stroke MAN B&W 6S80ME-C9 engine. Developed by MAN Diesel & Turbo, the EGR process already relies on Alfa Laval's PureNOx, which provides the vital cleaning of the scrubber water. Now Alfa Laval is cooperating with MAN Diesel & Turbo to implement an EGR boiler, which could potentially add major energy benefits to the secure emission compliance. Having demonstrated reliable compliance with Tier III NOx legislation, as well as the potential for fuel savings in Tier II operation, the vessel's EGR installation will soon be expanded with another remarkable technology: a pressurized EGR boiler from Alfa Laval. Rolls-Royce installs Promas Lite system for Star Cruises

Rolls-Royce has installed the innovative Promas Lite propulsion system on SuperStar Virgo, the first vessel in South East Asia to be equipped with this efficient and fuel saving system. Promas Lite is an integrated propeller and rudder system that increases efficiency and is designed specifically for retrofitting to existing ships. Norwegian Spirit operated by Star Cruises' subsidiary Norwegian Cruise Line was the first vessel in the fleet to be installed with Promas Lite in 2011. The efficiency gains and fuel saving benefits from the first upgrade has resulted in this subsequent order from Star Cruises. As Asia Pacific's leading cruise operator, they recognise that using the Promas Lite solution will substantially reduce emissions and the operating costs of SuperStar Virgo." Rolls-Royce to install Promas Lite system on four ships

Rolls-Royce has been contracted to install its innovative Promas Lite propulsion system on four Finnlines ships, all to be delivered later this year. Promas Lite is an integrated propeller and rudder system that increases efficiency and is designed specifically for retrofitting to existing ships. Finnlines is part of the Grimaldi Group, which has over three years of experience with Rolls-Royce on a series of projects to re-blade propellers to improve efficiency. The efficiency gains and fuel saving benefits created by these projects has led to this latest contract to equip four Finnlines vessels. In many previous Promas Lite upgrades, the primary goal has been to achieve fuel savings for the customer. Finnlines, however, wished to maximise the efficiency of its vessels while also ensuring the new engine configuration maintained the speeds required on its routes. Successfully striking this balance was key to securing the £3.8m order. Rewarding the improved fuel efficiency

AkzoNobel's Marine Coatings business, and The Gold Standard Foundation have announced a new and unique methodology to reward the improved fuel efficiency of ships within the international maritime industry. Certification by The Gold Standard for the first of its kind, peer-reviewed methodology will allow ships to generate carbon credits, thus income, for the CO2 emission reductions they achieve. The methodology is based on ship owners and operators converting existing vessels from a biocidal antifouling system to the premium, biocide-free advanced hull coating Intersleek. A baseline emission level is determined for the vessel prior to the application of Intersleek with the same data source then used to determine the emission savings after the application of Intersleek. The carbon credits generated are directly related to reduced emissions as a result of reduced fuel consumption. "This landmark methodology enables ship owners and operators to benefit twice when they invest in Intersleek technology. Firstly, they can increase operational, environmental and energy efficiencies, which reduces fuel costs and emissions and then they can reap the additional financial benefits of carbon credits, which we will share with them," says Trevor Solomon, Intersleek Business Manager. Seaspan Accepts Delivery of First 10000 TEU SAVER Containership

Seaspan Corporation  announced that it accepted delivery of a 10000 TEU containership, the Hanjin Buddha, which was constructed using Seaspan's fuel-efficient SAVER design. The new containership, which was constructed by Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., is Seaspan's first SAVER design vessel in the company's operating fleet. The Hanjin Buddha will commence a ten-year, fixed-rate time charter with Hanjin Shipping Co. Ltd. ("Hanjin"). The ship is the first of a total of three vessels to be chartered by Seaspan to Hanjin, and expands Seaspan's operating fleet to 72 vessels. Mitsubishi develops Hybrid SOx Scrubber System

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Mitsubishi Kakoki Kaisha (MKK) have jointly developed a "Hybrid SOx Scrubber System" that efficiently removes sulfur oxides (SOx) from exhaust gas emitted by marine diesel engines. The Hybrid SOx Scrubber System is the first in Japan to comply with the more stringent SOx emission regulations that will take effect in designated emission control areas (ECA) in 2015. The system is capable of scrubbing exhaust gas from the combustion of fuels emitted from bunker heavy fuel oil to the level combusting more costly low-sulfur fuel oil. By adopting a modular design, the system also facilitates retrofit installations on ships already in service. The Hybrid SOx Scrubber System has two scrubbing system: one that uses circulating with freshwater and the other uses one-pass flow with seawater. Removal of atmospheric pollutants can be effected by either system. The freshwater system is capable of scrubbing exhaust gas from combustions of heavy fuel oil with 3.5% sulfur content to that of low-sulfur fuel oil with 0.1% sulfur content, achieving compliance with SOx emission regulations of IMO (International Maritime Organization) scheduled to go into effect in ECA in 2015. ABB is granted AIP for Onboard DC Grid concept by ABS

ABB was granted Approval in Principal (AIP) for the Onboard DC Grid power distribution system by classification society ABS. AIP is a framework used by most classification societies to review and approve innovative and novel concepts not covered by traditional classification rules. In order to be granted the AIP, the Onboard DC Grid was subject to a series of risk assessment techniques to determine if the concept provides acceptable levels of safety in line with current marine industry practice, requirements and standards. The AIP now granted by ABS is a strong tool to support and streamline the design, approval, execution and inspection of new projects. Therefore, the benefits are extended to all parties involved on the shipbuilding process: designers, ship-owners, ship-yards and classification society.
