In its Port State Control Annual Report for 2017, the USCG revealed that detention regarding Flag Administrations from 2015 to 2017 have decreased  slightly, as they have gown to 1.40%, from 1.59%. This indicates a better performance from Flag Administrations. Flags with only one detention in the past three years are removed from the targeted flag list.

In its Port State Control Annual Report for 2017, USCG reports how good was the Flag Administration Security Compliance Performance. The targeting Control Action Ratio was fixed at 1.50%.  The USCG targets Flag Administrations for additional ISPS examinations if their Control Action Ratio is higher than the overall average for all flags. The countries that during 2017 had the highest Control Action Ratio are Tanzania (1.72%); Turkey (1.37); Philippines (0.82%); Saint Vincent and The Grenadines (0.71%); Bermuda (0.40%).

In its PSC Annual Report for 2017, the USCG provided an update on the QUALSHIP 21, the Coast Guard's initiative which attempts to recognize and reward vessels, as well as their owners and Flag Administrations, for their commitment to safety and quality. The program ended calendar year 2017 with an enrollment of 2,013 vessels.

The International Council on Clean Transportation issued five briefing papers, prepared by PhD Bryan Comer, summarizing HFO use in the IMO Polar Code Arctic, for 2015. Analyzing data for the cruise sector, the paper reveals 40 of 62 cruise ships operated on HFO in the region in 2015, with most HFO-fueled cruise ships flying the Bahamas flag. 

The registers of the two vessels, the 'Helena Kosan' and the 'Linda Kosan', have been changed to the Danish International Register of Shipping, as they begin a period time charter which will require an EU flag. The reflagging aims to show that the Danish flag is very close to being as competitive as Malta, Singapore and the Isle of Man.

A Chinese fishing ship was seized by Indonesian authorities suspected of illegal fishing, after it was found carrying six flags of different countries, according to the country's Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Susi Pudjiastuti.

At a ceremony held on last week at Port of Ras Tanura, Bahri raised the Saudi flag on 'Shaden', the country’s fifth Very Large Crude Carrier for 2017. Bahri claims to be currently the only transportation and Logistics company in the world to have a 41-strong VLCC fleet.

Rodolphe Saadé, General Director of the CMA CGM Group announced the company's decision to register four of its 20,000+ TEUs, under the French Flag. The company has declared its intention to equip the ships with engines using LNG in order to comply with new environmental rules.

According to a statement by the Liberian Registry, the International Transport Workers Federation has acknowledged Liberia as a quality flag, during a meeting at ITF headquarters in London.
