The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association and drone company Saildrone will launch the first batch of 11 unmanned sailing vehicles these days, as part of NOAA’s expanding use of technologies to advance fisheries, weather and climate science.

US Coast Guard law enforcement crews detected and interdicted two Mexican lancha boats, with a total of eight Mexican fishermen onboard, engaged in illegal fishing in federal waters off southern Texas, on Monday. Both lancha boats, with fishing gear onboard, were seized.

The crew of the US Coast Guard Cutter Alex Haley detained the fishing vessel 'Run Da' as it was suspected of illegal, unreported, unregulated fishing activity, on Saturday June 23, in international waters 860 miles east of Hokkaido, Japan. The captain of the Run Da admitted to fishing with driftnets up to 5.6 miles in length, while the joint boarding team discovered one ton of squid and 80 tons of chum salmon on board.

The USCG, NOAA, and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission jointly seized 11 shark fins and dismembered sharks aboard the 40-foot commercial fishing vessel 'Miss Shell', near South Sound Creek, on Monday. US law prohibits the act of shark finning since 2000.

TSB Canada issued an investigation report on the capsizing and sinking of the fishing vessel 'Miss Cory' in the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia, in March 2017, indicating inadequate vessel stability information as the key cause. One crew member was reported missing as a result from the accident. 

After twelve months of patrols and twelve arrests, Sea Shepherd's second joint operation with the Liberian Ministry of National Defense to tackle illegal fishing off Liberia, West Africa, has resulted in a dramatic drop in incidents of illegal fishing and the return of fish populations in formerly over-exploited coastal waters.

The NTSB issued an investigation report on the grounding and sinking of the fishing vessel 'Southern Bell' in the Gulf of Mexico, east of Sabine Pass Jetty Channel, in October 2017, that resulted in a release of approximately 3,800 gallons of diesel and oil into the water and in vessel total loss.

Although exact figures are hard to come by, preliminary estimates of fatalities in fishing are now over 32,000 people annually. These figures provided the background to talks at the Fifth International Fishing Industry Safety & Health Conference (iFish5), on 10–13 June, in St. John’s, Canada.

ATSB published a report about the collision between the container ship 'Glasgow Express' and the fishing vessel 'Mako.' The incident took place on 12 August 2017, 15 nautical miles south of Cape Woolamai, Victoria. The ATSB reported that a proper lookout by 'all available means' was not being maintained on neither vessel.

The new European Maritime and Fisheries Fund will continue to support the European fisheries sector for more sustainable fishing practices, as it will specifically focus on supporting small-scale fishermen. It will also help grow the potential of a sustainable blue economy towards a better future for coastal communities.
