A trawler has been arrested in Ghanaian waters after having been caught on illegally fishing at least 13.9 tonnes of small pelagic fish in a single day, using illegal nets, and has been ordered to pay a fine of $1 million by the Ghanaian authorities.

A Japanese Fisheries Agency patrol ship collided with a North Korean fishing vessel on the morning of Monday, October 7, which led to the sinking of the fishing vessel. NOAA launched its 2019 'Improving International Fisheries Management' report highlighting the nations who haven't made much effort to tackle illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities; Mexico, Ecuador and the Republic of Korea were identified for reported IUU activities. 

A 6% of all fishing nets, 9% of all traps, and 29% of all lines are lost or discarded into the oceans each year, researchers said in a world's first global estimate of commercial fishing gear losses into the oceans, according to data provided by Australia's national science agency, CSIRO.

A good Samaritan rescued three fishermen on September 18, after their boat capsized around 45 miles west of Egmont Key. They were later transported to Station St. Petersburg where they were released in good condition. A marine casualty investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the ship capsizing.
