According to reports, a fire erupted onboard the Indonesian Aframax crude oil tanker Jag Leela while the vessel was undergoing repairs at North Sumatra’s Belawan port, in Indonesia.

In 2019, four fire incidents occurred onboard RMI-registered yachts that resulted in the total constructive loss of the vessel, the Republic of the Marshall Islands Administrator informed, sharing key areas of concern and best practices. 

The UK MAIB issued a safety bulletin highlighting a potentially serious hazard associated with condensed aerosol firefighting suppressant particles. The warning came after a relevant fatal accident on the fishing vessel 'Resurgam', in November 2019. 

IMO’s SSE 7 took place in London on 2-6 March 2020. During the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment (SSE) Gard discussed about containership fires from the insurer's perspective and the challenge they appear to be for the maritime industry, recommending solutions and technologies that can improve the existent situation.

The IMO Sub-Committee on Ship Systems and Equipment (SSE) which started on 2 March, is set to finalize the draft guidelines focused on the safety of offshore power supply to vessels' operations, while is also working on crew safety matters.

The Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation (BSU) published an investigation report concerning the fire in the area of the deck cargo on board the container ship YANTIAN EXPRESS on the Atlantic Ocean, identifying Coconut charcoal as the likely cause of last year’s fire.

Paris MoU is issuing deficiencies over fire-fighting outfits, the RMI warned in a new advisory to shipping. As such, it advised that when the targeted firefighting outfits are the only ones available onboard, the fire teams should be aware of the outfit limitations.

The container vessel "EM-Oinousses" experienced an engine room fire while it was sailing  from Maputo to Mombasa, which the crew was able to put out, but the vessel ended up sailing uncontrollable. A salvage company conducted salvage operations and its helped the crewmembers onboard to safely disembark at the port of Nacala, without any injuries, on January 21.
