As the North P&I Club highlights, a recent incident that caused the deaths of ten people on board a vessel, has pinpointed the dangers of not fully understanding the operation of fixed CO2 systems. To prevent similar incidents, North suggests that it is critical for all persons involved to be aware of the risks.

In the morning hours of Saturday, November 2, three crew-members were killed due to an explosion aboard the Russian tanker Zaliv Amerika in the far east region of Russia, near the port of Nakhodka. In fact, a gas and air mixture blast occurred on board the bunkering tanker, according to the regional branch of Russia’s Investigative Committee, whereas no blaze was issued after the incident took place.

A crewmember of a Singapore-flagged Capesize bulker lost his life after a gas explosion onboard the vessel on October 28, marking the challenging life of the seafarer and the fatalities that are hiding. The 2014-built Cape India was transiting Makassar Strait, sailing from China to Australia, when the explosion took place. 

On October 23, 39 bodies of Chinese nationals were found in a refrigerated truck trailer just outside the Purfleet freight terminal, a ro/ro freight ferry port, 18 miles outside of London on the River Thames. The British Ports Association commented on these findings, saying that 'we were horrified to see the events in Essex.'

Two dead passengers were found onboard the Tallink Silja Europa passenger cruise ship, on October 20, while the vessel was anchored at a port in Tallinn, Estonia, under unknown causes. For the time being, the causes of the fatal incident remain unknown, as police are investigating the factors that caused the two passengers' death.

RMI issued an investigation report on a fatal fall onboard the bulk carrier 'Penelope' while underway in the Coral Sea in November 2018. A seafarer was standing on the extension platform for one of the ship’s provision cranes which detached and fell 8-9 meters.
