This case has already received wide media coverage.8 Russian crew members worked on board the Swanland (built 1978) and only two of them were rescued. They are Vitaliy Karpenko, AB, and Roman Savin, 2-nd Officer. Leonid Safonov, Chief Officer, was found dead later whilst searching for seafarers. As for the rest of the crew, they are missing.MAIB inspectors have started their investigation into the loss of the ship. Mother jumped off a moving sea vessel to save her daughter A former overseas Filipino worker (OFW) mother died after she jumped off a moving sea vessel to save her daughter who reportedly fell into the sea at the boundary of Bacolod and Talisay cities on Friday.Lieutenant Commander Dominador Senador, chief of the Philippine Coast Guard-Bacolod, yesterday identified the casualties as Michelle Tiamsing, 30, and her daughter Joemcelle, 2, both residents of Ilog town in Negros Occidental.Reports said the fatalities were on board M/V St. Joseph the Worker owned by the Negros Navigation that was bound for Manila when the incident happened.Senador said the management of Negros Navigation had informed them that two of their passengers fell from the vessel at about 2.7 nautical miles off the shorelines of Bacolod and Talisay.He said it took about 30 minutes before rescuers retrieved the bodies that were immediately brought to a funeral home in Bacolod.A 17-year-old witness, whose name was not disclosed, told the police and the Coast Guard that she saw Tiamsing carrying the child in her arms near the edge of the vessel.She also said that some passengers told Tiamsing to stay away from the edge but she did not ...

Family seeks more information The family of a seafarer from Apo Island in Dauin town of Negros Oriental has sought detailed information on the circumstances surrounding his death recently in Korea.Lauro Suan Alaton, 39, married, reportedly died onboard the cargo ship MV (Chang) Tai Hong I sometime between last Saturday and Sunday, according to his younger brother Ronald Alaton.Ronald told the media his family received information that his brother Lauro died, but the report did not specify whether the ship was on port call in North Korea or South Korea.Lauro this year signed a contract with BB Shipping, a company based in Metro Manila, and had boarded the Tai Hong I last January, said Ronald.Last November 28, Alaton's family in Apo Island got a call from the recruitment agency informing them that Lauro's contract was being extended.Early this month however, the agency informed the family about Lauro's fate. Maintenance of the wires had been hindered by the design of the davit Poor maintenance and a design flaw have been blamed for the death of a cruise ship worker who plunged into the water and drowned while working on a lifeboat in Lyttelton this year.The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) launched an investigation after two men fell from the cruise ship Volendam while carrying out routine maintenance on a starboard lifeboat in January.One of the men was rescued shortly afterward. The other man was seen in the water briefly in what appeared to be a dazed state, but he soon disappeared.He could not be found despite a search by the ship's rescue vessel, Coastguard, the port authority and emergency services.Port authority divers found the man's body about four hours later.The TAIC report, released today, found that the men fell from the lifeboat after one of the two wires attaching it to the ship failed.The men were wearing safety harnesses but the wire holding the harnesses to the ship also failed during the accident.Neither man was wearing a buoyancy device.The lifeboat remained attached to the ship by the aft wire but suffered irreparable damage.The accident also caused damage to the ...

One was killed and seven were injured One fisherman was missing and seven others injured after a ferry rammed their boat before dawn Friday off Maasim town in the southern Philippine province of Sarangani, police said.Police said the mishap occurred at around 1 a.m. while the Superferry was sailing for Manila. The other crew members rushed to hospital. Ship sinks near Oman, 5 Indian sailors dead

Nine sailors are still missing An Indian ship sank off the coast of southern Oman, drowning five Indian sailors and leaving nine others missing.The ship MSV Shiv Sagar sank near the southern Dhofar region of Oman on Saturday, local media reports said. Six sailors were rescued after the Omani coast guards and naval vessels launched a rescue operation but nine others are still missing, the Gulf News reported.The southern Dhofar region was hit by torrential rains this week, flooding the region and killing 12 people. The Met authorities in the region had cautioned fishermen and other seafarers to check the condition of the sea before venturing out.The rescued sailors were initially taken to the Sadah Hospital for treatment. Bodies of 8 Divers Trapped Underwater Recovered in Persian Gulf

They trapped underwater while installing an underwater oil pipeline The bodies of eight of the thirteen divers trapped underwater have been recovered, according to Iran's official news agency. There is no word on the remaining divers.The divers - 7 Indians, 5 Iranians, and 1 Ukrainian - were part of a team installing an underwater oil pipeline. They were operating inside a pressurized diving chamber when their Koosha-1 ship sank in the Persian Gulf Thursday afternoon. The chamber was onboard the ship at the time wand the divers were inside - to avoid having to pressurize and depressurize for each dive.Officials say stormy weather was in the area when the nearly 3 decade old offshore support vessel sank, just 15 miles from Iran's coast.Six of the bodies recovered were found in the diving chamber that became trapped underwater. All six were Indians. Iran's official news agancy reports that two more bodies were recovered at the depth of 72 meters. MRCC Petropavlovsk advised vessel to head for Petropavlovsk, as S&R service doesn't have helicopter capable of such a long-range flight.
