Effective 2 June 2021, licensed shipping lines and agents operating in Kenya will be mandated to use the Maritime Single Window System (MSW) to electronically prepare and submit vessel pre-arrival and pre-departure declarations to the government agencies at the Port of Mombasa.

IAPH conducted a survey during October 2020 to all ports concerning the use of data under the FAL Convention and the role of digitalization within the port sector, revealing that the majority of respondents struggle with the mandatory requirement on electronic data exchange.

Electronic information exchange and data harmonization, work for a maritime single window and maritime corruption guidance were the key themes on the agenda of IMO's FAL Committee, during its 43rd session on 8-12 April 2019.

IMO agreed to address maritime corruption by including this issue in its work programme for the Facilitation Committee. The decision to include an anti-corruption agenda came during the latest meeting of the IMO’s Facilitation Committee (FAL) in response to a submission from Liberia, Marshall Islands, Norway, United Kingdom, US and Vanuatu.

BIMCO has received solid support for a submission at the 43rd session of the Facilitation Committee meeting (FAL 43) held at the IMO Headquarters on 8-12 April, that will ensure harmonisation of data exchanges and limit the administrative burden for ships. The submission proposed the introduction of additional e-business solutions that supplement communication stipulated in the FAL Convention.

Malaysia announced that it's in favour of IMO's treaty enhancing communication between ships and ports. This brings the number of contracting States to the Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic (FAL Convention) to 123.

​A mandatory requirement for national governments to introduce electronic information exchange between ships and ports comes into effect from 8 April 2019, as the IMO's Facilitation Committee meets for its 43rd session, on 8-12 April. The aim is to make cross-border trade simpler and the logistics chain more efficient.

Costa Rica is the latest country to ratify the Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic (FAL Convention). The IMO treaty enhances communication between ships and ports to help shipments move more quickly, more easily and more efficiently.

A new phase in a project to develop a maritime single window for Antigua and Barbuda has begun, with the installation of the first, basic system platform, the IMO announced. Testing will now begin and if successful, the system could potentially benefit other countries of the Caribbean and other regions of the world.

Global trade by sea depends on the communication between ships, ports and everyone that is involved, from port operators, to regulators, to maritime security experts and innovators in technology. That was the message of a special event on ports, held at IMO Headquarters on June 11.
