In its latest South America Container Trades report, Dynamar focuses on the growth that has returned in America after three years of reduction in its global trade. The report highlights the development after economic contractions between 2014-2016, with a recovery in 2017. The overall container carryings between South America and the rest of the market experienced an increase of over 10 million TEU in 2017, 8% more than 2016. The report expects South America containerized trade to reach 14 million TEU in 2021.

During 2018, Sea Port of Saint-Petersburg JSC handled 7.7 million tonnes of cargo showing a 12%  increase in comparison to 2017's numbers. The increase of cargo traffic is attributed the development of yards dedicated for transshipment of cast iron, metal scrap, ore, mineral fertilizers and containers.

South Africa's port of Durban resulted with an overall throughput of 2.975 million TEU, increased from the 2.699 million in 2017. That’s an rise of 276.000 TEU for the year, equal to over 10%, which will be a boost to Transnet Port Terminals (TPT). Nationally the increase on containers was 5.3% with the total for all ports reaching 4.833 million TEU, according to the Mercury.

Magellan Midstream Partners LP is discussing with companies that develop crude transportation assets in Freeport, Texas, as it plans to build a US crude export terminal instead of its previously scheduled spot off Corpus Christi. Despite Corpus Christi construction, the pipeline operator considers all of its options, including an offshore terminal off Freeport, closer to its crude storage and terminal assets in Houston, according to Mark Roles, senior vice president at Magellan.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced that it would now only require U.S. LNG exporters to report the country or countries of LNG deliveries, not country of end-use, to satisfy the DOE’s destination reporting requirement.

As we are now two months into the US soybeans trading year, the trade war between US and China is making its impact more apparent, Maritime Strategies International informs. Namely, US exports between September and October are less by 41%, as well as the exports to China (96%). However, there is an increase to shipments elsewhere (86%).

The trade war combined with the Chinese tariffs on imports of US soya beans are making their affects visible during the beginning of the soya bean exporting period in the US, as it has seen a 97% decrease in the amount of soya beans it sends to China, BIMCO said. 

The Port of Corpus Christi entered into an agreement with Carlyle to develop a crude oil export terminal on Harbor Island, to connect the increasing crude oil production in the US with global markets. The terminal will be the first onshore location in the US able of providing export service to fully-laden VLCCs.

According to BIMCO Iran emerged as the number one buyer of US soya beans. Namely, during August 2018, 414,000 tonnes, an amount that equals five Panamax loads of soya beans were shipped to Iran. This amounts to 13.2% of total US soya bean exports in August.

In August there were zero US seaborne exports of crude oil to China. On the other hand, US crude exports to all destinations except from China hit a new all-time high in September at 6.96 million tonnes. The zero US crude oil exports to China is a massive change to the export pattern seen since early 2017, BIMCO said.
