The 2022 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea has been presented to Bo Xu, a chief officer from China who selflessly jumped from his oil tanker into freezing seas off northern China to save two individuals clinging to a life raft from a sinking cargo ship.

A search and rescue officer from Viet Nam has recently received the 2021 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea.

Petty Officer Michael Kelly, a rescue swimmer with the United States Coast Guard, received the 2019 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea during this year's IMO Awards ceremony, on 25 November, after rescuing four survivors from a life raft from a sinking fishing vessel in heavy weather. 

A Petty Officer from the US Coast Guard will receive the 2019 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea, for rescuing four survivors from a life raft, in extremely high winds and heavy seas. The decision was endorsed by the IMO Council at its 122nd session in London, on 15-19 July.

A new video released online depicts the magnitude of the danger that two Houston Pilots encountered after their ship broke down and burst into flames, following collision with mooring dolphins. The two pilots, Captain McGee and Captain Phillips, were the receivers of the IMO's Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea 2017, in July.

Pilots Captain Michael G. McGee and Captain Michael C. Phillips, from Houston were recognized for their role in averting a tragedy in September 2016, when the tanker they were piloting broke down in the Houston Ship Channel in the middle of the night and burst into flames, after colliding with mooring dolphins.
