North Sea Gas Leak Forces More Evacuations

Ships and aircraft extending 2 nautical miles (3.7 kms) around the platform, are banned Energy company Shell has withdrawn some workers from two platforms near an underwater gas leak east of Scotland, around which the Coast Guard set up a security perimeter banning traffic of ships and aircraft.The leak of flammable gas was discovered over the weekend from a platform owned by French company Total S.A., which evacuated all staff on Monday.Industry and government officials evaluated options for dealing with leak, but their best hope may be that the well simply runs out of gas within a few weeks.David Hainsworth, health, safety and environment manager for Total, said the company had taken steps to reduce the possibility of an explosion."The gas is flammable but the platform power was turned off to minimize risk of ignition, but clearly there is a risk," Hainsworth said in a BBC radio interview. Injured sailors transfered to Bermuda for treatment

Having head injuries Three injured sailors were brought to Bermuda for treatment this week.Two seamen from the Northern Javelin container vessel were ferried to St Georges by pilot boat in the early hours of Monday.Later the same day, a member of the crew of the Samjohn Light was evacuated to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.The two Northern Javelin sailors, both Burmese, were injured on board the ship.The vessel, travelling from the US to Egypt, changed course and arrived at Five Fathom Hole at 1am on Monday.The men were treated for head injuries. Both were due to fly home on Mondays BA flight.The pilot boat crew headed to Five Fathom Hole again at about 5pm on Monday to pick up the ill sailor on board the Samjohn Light. 19 Crew evacuated from survey rig

No resultant pollution At 03:24 Humber Coastguard received a call from the standby vessel DUTCH PEARL, reporting that the jack-up rig VAGANT had stuck fast on the sea bed and was being swamped by the rising tide.19 crewmembers from the rig were swiftly evacuated to the DUTCH PEARL and MRCC Humber took coordination of the incident.Hartlepool RNLI all-weather lifeboat was launched to the scene and transferred 16 of the crew members to Teesport. Coastguard Rescue Teams from Hartlepool and Redcar were alerted to assist with reception of the evacuated casualties ashore.Three rig crew members remain on the standby vessel Dutch Pearl and intend to return to the rig at low tide to attempt to free her from the seabed. It is believed vessel struck rocks in severe weather in shallow waters close to coastline.Vessel was holed and by now, April 6, bow part is in water up to Hold No 4.
