The deadline for its implementation, the May 25th, has reached to an end, meaning that from now onwards, all organizations in the EU, as well as those that deal with data related to EU residents, should comply with new data privacy laws.  Albeit the increased awareness over this issue by the business world, have we really understood what about this regulation is? And most importantly, are we actually prepared for compliance?

The General Data Protection Regulation is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy. Ahead of the GDPR that is about to come into effect, the Swedish Club advises operators on how to try and reduce the risk of a breach.

We hear that ISO 27001 is a non-technical systems focused standard. This may confuse most of us and create queries on how this standard may help organizations, including the maritime ones, achieve the EU GDPR.

The implementation of the GDPR from May 2018 comes with many challenges for all organizations as they will need to adopt new business practices, internal policies, technical and organizational measures. Extensive training in data protection and privacy legislation is a critical factor for the success of GDPR.

A recent study conducted by Ponemon Institute and sponsored by IBM Resilient found that 77% of respondents do not have a formal cyber security incident response plan applied consistently across their organization, while nearly half of the 2800 respondents reported that their incident response plan is either informal/ad hoc or completely non-existent.

General Data Protection Regulation will come into force on 25 May 2018 when it will have direct effect in the EU/EEA1. GDPR will be incorporated into Swedish law and enter into force at the same time. For that reason, the Swedish Club tries to explain this regulation.

GDPR, replacing the EU Data Protection Directive, will come into force on 25 May 2018.

North Club highlighted the steps to be taken by the industry ahead the EU General Data Protection Regulation, which enters into force in May 2018. The GDPR will update current data protection legislation by requiring businesses who deal with EU citizens to be transparent about how they use their data. The costs of non-compliance are potentially very high.
