European port worker associations expressed their disappointment and frustration in regards to no actions taken by the European Commission on the challenges faced by the port sector due to COVID-19 as well as withdrawal of capacity by major liner companies.

The European Parliament endorsed on February 9 the agreement on the Proposal for a Regulation establishing a Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), with the main priority to recover from the crisis caused by COVID-19.

As Brexit entered into force, the EU and the UK will need to deal with border controls by January 1st 2020, ESPO reports. Border controls will used to ensure that both countries are in line with the formalities needed concerning trade.

Following the release of European Commission's new "EU Mobility Strategy", European Sea Ports Organisation welcomes the ambition of the strategy to deliver the Green Deal transport target and reduce GHG emissions by 90%.

In order to align with the EU Green Deal objectives, the forthcoming review of the Trans European Network for Energy (TEN-E) Guidelines must recognize the central role of ports in Europe’s new energy systems, ESPO said. 

On 17 November, MEPC75 gave preliminary approval to the compromise agreement for the package of technical and operational measures to address greenhouse gas emissions from ships in the short run. ESPO sees the agreement as a first step, but stresses the need for higher ambitions.

While ports are ready to embrace and adapt to a changed reality due to COVID-19, it is unclear how long the current major disruption of Europe’s economy and society will last. For this reason, ESPO proposed a two-step approach to set the ground for a long-term EU Transport Strategy.
