The European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO), in a statement released yesterday, supported the aims set out in the Nature Restoration Law, but believes this new proposal must act as a complement to existing EU legislation, rather than introducing another layer of complexity in nature restoration efforts.

On the 13th of March 2023, the European Parliament is expected to vote on the political agreement for the revised EU Emissions Trading System (ETS)

On 5 December, the Transport Council reached a provisional agreement on the review of the TEN-T guidelines of 2013. ESPO welcomed the text, since it backs the Commission’s approach to lift the importance of the maritime dimension and strengthen the role of ports within the framework of Europe’s TEN-T policy.

ESPO welcomes the preliminary agreement reached amongst co-legislators on the inclusion of shipping in a maritime EU Emission Trading System (EU ETS).

ESPO continues to support the extension of the EU Emission Trading System (EU ETS) to the maritime sector, recognising that the maritime EU ETS can be a powerful mechanism to accelerate the green transition of the sector.

ESPO, FEPORT, and the European Tugowners Association (ETA) signed a joint press release, recognising the need for the shipping sector to reduce emissions. For this reason, they support requirements for ships to reduce emissions, alongside requirements for the use and deployment of onshore power supply (OPS) where it makes sense in ports.

ESPO welcomed the outcome of the European Parliament's (EP) vote on the proposals for the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) and the FuelEU Maritime Regulation on 19 October.
