Dublin Port achieves high environmental recognition

  Dublin Port received a Port Environment Review System (PERS) certificate during a dedicated ceremony at the ESPO annual conference in Athens. Mr Santiago Garcia Mila, ESPO Chairman, handed over the PERS certificate to Eamonn O'Reilly, Chief Executive, Dublin Port Company. "We congratulate Dublin Port for achieving the PERS certification, in particular since it has been a long-time supporter of the EcoPort tools and approach. Dublin Port is a good example to follow as it achieves a PERS certification for the fourth time in a row", said ESPO's Chairman Santiago Garcia Mila. "We are very pleased to receive this PERS certificate for the fourth time in a row. Receiving this PERS Certification at the ESPO Conference is a great honour for us especially as we will be hosting the ESPO Conference in Dublin next year" said Eamonn O'Reilly, Chief Executive, Dublin Port Company. PERS is the only port sector specific environmental management standard. Port of Koper wins ESPO Award 2014

The Port of Koper in Slovenia has been awarded this year’s ESPO Award in recognition of its work in creating a sustainable future for the port and its surroundings. Koper was presented with the Award at a ceremony in Brussels on November 4, 2014. The theme of this year’s ESPO Award was Innovative Environmental Projects. Koper won the 2014 Award for its project, No Waste, Just Resources!, which aims to reduce the amount of waste through encouraging its reuse or reprocessing into environment-friendly materials, and includes such innovations as the use of paper mill sludge as an anti-dusting agent, the introduction of a heating system that uses recycled wood, the operation of the waste separation centre and composting plant and the reuse of marine silt as a construction material. The ESPO Award 2014 attracted  twenty projects from ports from all over Europe compete for the prize. Koper beat shortlisted projects from the ports of Huelva, Lisbon, Marseille and Rotterdam. Putting forward a green environmental image for ports

Nearly 200 delegates from across the world came together for the 9th GreenPort Congress opening session on 15 October 2014 which focused on putting forward a positive environmental image for ports. Held in Barcelona this week, this year's Congress host, the Port of Barcelona opened proceedings, by talking about the many challenges that a port has to face in light of new emission regulations. Sixte Cambra, President, Port Authority of Barcelona, said that the port has seen both a dramatic improvement in terms of emissions and the elevation of the need to provide alternative fuels for shipping, in its case, LNG. The port wants to install a re-gasification plant at the port with a capacity of one million cubic metres. A positive image for ports The Congress opening session was all about putting forward a positive environmental image forward for ports and spreading the message about working together with stakeholders and the local community to achieve emissions targets.
